Canada 1:1 Belarus after Fed Cup 2016 tie's day 1
After the first Fed Cup World Group II competition day Belarus are holding 1:1 against Canada. The matches are being held at Pavillon de l'éducation physique et des sports de l'Université Laval in Quebec City.
In the debut singles match, Belarusian Alexandra Sasnovich (99th in the world ranking) won against Canadian Françoise Abanda (343), 6:4, 2:6, 6:3.

Today in Quebec, there was held a draw for the first-round match of World Group II of the Fed Cup between Belarus and Canada. This will be their first meeting at such a level.
The captain of the Belarusian team Eduard Dubrov first included in the team the leader Victoria Azarenka (14th in the WTA ranking) but then replaced her with 17-year-old Nika Shitkovskaya. Also in the squad are Olga Govortsova (74), Alexandra Sasnovich (99) and Vera Lapko (538).
Belarusian speed skaters preparing for 2016 Winter Youth Olympics
The Belarusian team is preparing to leave for the Youth Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Eight boys and the same number of girls will take part in the competition in seven sports. For the first time, Belarusians took part in the Youth Winter Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994 and won two medals. Back then silver went to biathlete Svetlana Paramygina and skater Igor Zhelezovsky.
Skaters train 5-6 hours a day. They have one day off per week. In summer, they go to their skating rink by bicycles in order to warm up before training on ice.

The ex-leaders of the club were detained in the summer of 2015. During the investigation the defendants almost completely repaid the illegally obtained assets.

Belarus supports Infantino in FIFA presidential election
The Belarusian Football Federation (ABFF) will support the candidature of the FIFA general secretary Gianni Infantino in the upcoming FIFA presidential election, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Sergei Safaryan told media.
Mr Safaryan noted that since the beginning of the scandalous events, with the removal of the heads of FIFA and UEFA Belarus supported Michel Platini, but after the Frenchman was forced to withdraw his candidacy, the country decided to vote in favor of Infantino, who has already presented his program.

The handball team of Belarus have lost to Poland in the main round of the Men's European Handball Championship.
In a duel with the hosts of the continental championship, coach Yuri Shevtsov's charges in Krakow fought on equal terms against Poland in the first half but by the break the advantage of the Poles rose to six goals, 19:13. In the second half, Belarusians played without their captain Sergei Rutenko, who was injured at the beginning of the match. Eventually, Belarus lost to Poland 27:32.

Footballers of Team Belarus U18 took second place at the Development Cup 2016, which ended at Minsk's Futbolnyi Manezh Arena.

On January 9, BC Tsmoki Minsk, after heavy matches against CSKA and Khimki pulled out a long-awaited victory in the VTB United League. The Minsk club defeated Estonian Kalev on the home ground.

Azarenka claims Brisbane International title, set to return into WTA top 20
The Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka for the second time in her career won the tournament Brisbane International.
January 9 in the final, Azarenka met German Angelique Kerber (10) and won in straight sets 6:3, 6:1. The match lasted 1 hour and 14 minutes.
After the victory in the final, Azarenka earned $193,000 and 479 ranking points. This will allow her to return to the top 20 of the WTA ranking.

Belarus wins XII Christmas hockey tournament 2016
The team of the Belarus President became the winner of the 2016 Christmas International Amateur Ice Hockey Tournament. In the final, Belarusians in a bitter struggle defeated Finland 2:1 (0:1, 1:0, 1:0).
Belarus conceded in the first period but then thanks to goals by Andrei Glebov, in the 36th minute, and Daniel Corso (44th minute) the hosts restored the lead and eventually celebrated a victory.
This is the 9th time the team of the President of Belarus has won the Christmas tournament. Previously, in the bronze medal game Slovakia beat Sweden 17:3.

Azarenka into WTA tournament's semi for first time since February 2015
Victoria Azarenka for the first time since February 2015 will play in the semifinals of a WTA tournament. She secured a semifinal place at Brisbane International after a win over Italian Roberta Vinci (6:1, 6:2) in the quarterfinal.
At the preliminary stage of the tournament the Belarusian tennis player competed with rivals with rankings from 101 to 200 but 15th ranked Roberta Vinci was waiting for her in the quarterfinals.
The 6:1, 6:2 tie lasted one hour and eighteen minutes. This is Azarenka's fourth match against Vinci and the fourth victory.
Belarus to take on Finland in Christmas Hockey Tournament final

Belarus U20 knocked out of IIHF U20 worlds elite
The U20 national team of Belarus in Helsinki suffered another defeat against their peers from Switzerland in the survival series and was knocked out of the elite division of the IIHF U20 world championship.
Belarus lost to Switzerland 2:6 (2:3, 0:3, 0:0) after a 1:5 defeat in the first game.
The Belarusian team returned to the elite division only last year.
Belarus' first Rhythmic Gymnastics Palace to be completed by 2017

Belarusian Dmitry Atrokhov wins boxing tournament Next Generation
The Belarusian Dmitry Atrokhov has won the boxing tournament Next Generation in Belarus' capital Minsk. The tournament featured mostly Belarusian fighters, with six bouts in the fight card. The last bout was to become the central one, between the experienced Ukrainian Vladimir Borovsky and young Dmitry Atrokhov. However, it was the Ukrainian who was defeated already in the second round by a knockout.

Review of Belarus' sports events (December 21-27)
HC Dinamo Minsk spend two games in the KHL. First, they visited Bratislava, where they played the fourth match of the season against Slovan. The White-Blues did not get anything from that game losing 2-4.
From the Slovak capital Dinamo headed for the Croatian main city but also lost. Andrei Kovalev's club twice led against Zagreb's Medveščak but lost in overtime 2-3.
Belarus U20 started the World Championship in Helsinki with two defeats.
Belarus' Azarenka ends 2015 in 22nd spot in WTA ranking
The best Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka has completed the year 2015 in 22nd place in the WTA ranking.
To date, Victoria Azarenka has 2,276 points.
Another Belarusian tennis player Olga Govortsova, is also in the top 100 having 851 points (71st place in the world ranking).
Slovakia defeat Belarus at IIHF U20 Worlds
Belarus U20 suffered a second consecutive defeat at the start of the U20 IIHF World Championships in Helsinki.
Belarus were likely to take points from Slovakia but lost 2-4 (1-1, 1-1. 0-2). The Slovaks, though becoming bronze medalists of the last World Championship in Helsinki, have brought just four players from the previous squad.
Goaltender Ivan Kulbakov became the key player in the Belarus squad. If it were not for his heroism, Belarusians would see many more goals in their goal.
Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka wins in Pune ITF final
Young tennis player Aryna Sabalenka finished the season and it was triumphant! After the failure in the ITF final, the Belarusian again reached the decisive match last week and this time she celebrated a victory.
This success will allow her to enter the new ranking of the top 300 tennis players in the world.
Dinamo Minsk ends 2015 with defeat at HC Medvescak
A short visiting tour of the Belarusian hockey club Dinamo Minsk to Central Europe completed unsuccessfully. The Bison scored only one point out of possible six.
In Zagreb, coach Andrei Kovalev's team took on HC Medvescak. The visitors were twice in the lead thanks to Alexei Kalyuzhny's and Ryan Vesce's goals but The Bears restored parity. Everything was decided in overtime. Unfortunately, Dinamo Minsk lost 2-3.

Christmas mood permeates most of the December events. Members of the Government and famous Belarusians congratulate those who most need it bringing gifts to orphanages.
On 26 December the Belarus head of state visited the athletics arena in Minsk, where girls and boys from all over Belarus demonstrated their athletic talents.
About 300 best young athletes of the country arrived in Minsk. This is a good chance to prove oneself.
2015: One of FC BATE's best seasons
The Belarusian club BATE Borisov can consider 2015 among the best years in the history of the Yellow-Blues. The Borisov club, as before, has no equals in the domestic arena. BATE made a treble in 2015 winning the Belarus Cup, the Supercup and the Belarusian Premier League, 10th in a row.
Only the champion of Gibraltar, the Latvian club Skonto and Norwegian Rosenborg can boast the same or more impressive hegemonies in their championships. These clubs have won 13 consecutive championships in their countries. Well, maybe BATE will repeat this success...
Professional boxing tournament Next Generation held in Minsk
The professional boxing tournament Next Generation finished in Minsk.
Most of the participants were newcomers to the professional ring. So the fights were an excellent opportunity for the young boxing enthusiasts to express themselves in sport.
The best in their weight were Mikhail Shingareev, Nikita Kanashevich and Timur Asadov. One of the battles ended in a draw: in the welterweight fight Nikolai Khilkevich and Alexander Gaydulin both fighters deserved a victory.
Belarus to take part in Dakar 2016
Thousands of kilometers of sand dunes and steppes. Belarus will once again take part in one of the most challenging and prestigious races in the world Dakar 2016.
During two weeks the Belarusian team will be conquering the mountain trails of Bolivia and flat roads of Argentina. The crews will use Belarusian vehicles.
By the way, each of these impressive trucks was assembled by Belarusian designers and engineers manually. In 2015, Belarus entered the top 10 crews at Dakar.
Belarusian bags bronze at Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in UAE
Belarusian fencer Alex Senkevich has won the bronze medal at the Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in the UAE. In a duel for third place he beat another Belarusian Andrei Pronevich 15:8.
Taking part in the tournament were 40 countries. The competition winners get Olympic licenses.
Another Belarusian, Oleg Malinovsky, was ninth. All Belarusian athletes are students of coach Semyon Suschin and represent the Polotsk school of fencing.
Next Generation boxing tournament weigh-in held in Minsk
It is worth a lot to see how boxers smile at each other and shake hands friendly. After all, inside the ring they are opponents who try hard to beat each other. At the weigh-in before the professional boxing tournament Next Generation in Minsk, there reigned quite a nice atmosphere.
Nigel Short: Belarus can call itself a country with chess culture
Today's guest of the TV program Week on the CTV is Nigel Short, who came to Minsk this week for the European Championship in Rapid Chess. At age 19, he became the youngest grandmaster in history and today one of the strongest players in the world. Our correspondent Yana Shipko talked with Mr Short.

Belarus takes Arosa Challenge 2015 bronze
Belarus has beaten Norway 5:1 (1:0, 3:0, 2:0) in the third-place match of the Arosa Challenge, an ice hockey tournament in Switzerland.
In the Arosa Challenge final, Swiss hockey players defeated the Slovaks 3:2 in shootout (0:0, 2:1, 0:1, 0:0, 1:0).
In the first game, the semifinal of the tournament, Belarus lost to Slovakia 1:4 and lost the right to play in the final.
FIDE proposes chess electives in Belarusian schools
Head of FIDE Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, at the meeting with the Belarusian president, suggested that chess be taught in Belarusian schools. Alexander Lukashenko supported the idea, and next year such pilot electives will appear in some educational institutions of the country. The meeting with Mr Ilyumzhinov took place during the European Championship in Rapid Chess and Blitz, which is now underway in Minsk.
Belarus U20 gearing up for IIHF World Junior Championship in Finland
The junior national team of Belarus (U20) have arrived in Helsinki where they will take part in the IIHF Junior World Championship. Belarus' primary task is to defend a place in the top flight. Belarus received a place in the elite thanks to a brilliant victory last year in Italy.
On December 26, Belarus hold the opening match with hosts Finland.
Special menu for athletes during European Youth Olympic Festival
Thousands of athletes from 50 countries will come to Belarus to partake in the European Youth Olympic Festival. It will be held in distant 2019, but preparations for the championship have already started.
The application of the Belarusian capital was supported by the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees. Stadiums and major arenas should be ready for the festival. The competitions will be held in arenas and stadiums of the top level - almost all of them have been tested, except for the Minsk stadium Dinamo, which is currently undergoing renovations.
Belarusian clubs eliminated from CEV Challenge Cup
Minsk’s Sports Palace hosted yesterday two games of the CEV Challenge Cup last 32 featuring Belarusian men and women’s clubs.
VC Minchanka, after the away win in Germany 3-2, were to face Wiesbaden in the return match. The Minsk club made lots of mistakes and were trailing 1-2 before finally winning a set and restoring intrigue. However, Wiesbaden were much better that day and defeated Minchanka 3-1 to enter the next round of the Challenge Cup.
Belarus into 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup playoffs
The Belarusian national futsal team will play in the playoffs of the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup qualifying tournament. On Sunday evening, the Belarusian national team held the final match of the group stage.
In Croatian Osijek, which hosts the qualifying group tournament, Belarusians drew the ultimate game against Sweden (2:2). In the other group match, Azerbaijan played out a 4:4 draw with the hosts Croatia.
Review of Belarus' sports events (December 7-13)
Dinamo Minsk has played three games in the KHL regular season. In the home battle against the leader of the Western Conference, CSKA Moscow, The Bison were defeated 1:3. Belarus' sporting events from 14 to 20 December 2015
The Belarusian national ice hockey team travels to Switzerland for the annual tournament Arosa Challenge. Belarusians will take on Norwegians and Slovaks. Slovakia will become Belarus' first opponents.
Wednesday will be a hot day for Belarusian volleyball fans. Two Belarusian clubs Minchanka and Stroitel will play return matches of the Challenge Cup last 32. The girls will have to keep the edge they earned a week ago against German VC Wiesbaden. Stroitel faces a more difficult task: in the first game, it lost to Turkish Istanbul 1:3 and now have to win.
Belarus-NATO cooperation discussed in Brussels
Cooperation between Belarus and the EU and NATO was discussed in Brussels. In Belgium, the foreign minister of Belarus met with foreign ministers of the European Union. The sides exchanged views on the state and prospects of cooperation.
Vladimir Makei also held talks with EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn and NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow.
Belarus' Tatiana Drozdovskaya third at ISAF Sailing World Cup
Belarusian sailor Tatiana Drozdovskaya took third place at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne.
Tatiana Drozdovskaya competed in the women's Laser Radial class to win the bronze medal (29 points). After eight races she lost to Australian Ashley Stoddart (14 points) who took gold and Susannah Pyat from New Zealand (24 points), who came in second in the overall table.
Taking part in the first stage of the World Cup were 900 athletes in nine Olympic and three Paralympic classes of boats.
SKA Minsk director Pavel Galkin about handball in Belarus
The main topic of this week is handball. Belarusian clubs play quite successfully at European championships. For example, SKA Minsk has managed to get into the group stage of the EHF (European Handball Federation) Cup. Fans may remember that SKA Minsk had no match in the 1980s. General Director of HC SKA Minsk Pavel Galkin remembers those times too and he is directly involved in HC SKA club management today.
European Blitz and Rapid Chess Championship in Minsk on December 18
A grandiose chess event, the European Blitz and Rapid Chess Championship, will start in Minsk on December 18. More than 800 chess players from 31 countries, including Belarus, have applied for the competition.
The tournament’s prize fund is more than 30,000 euros. The forum will be held at Minsk Sports Palace since one of the FIDE’s conditions was to hold the competition in the centre of the city within walking distance to all the main infrastructure.
BATE hold Roma to goalless draw, knocked out of Champions League
FC BATE Borisov have finished another European Cup campaign. In the away match against Italy's Roma coach Alexander Ermakovich's BATE had to win against Roma in order to progress to the Champions League playoff or at least claim a place in the Europa League.
SKA Minsk developing youth handball
Minsk’s handball club SKA-Minsk trains second graders in a playful manner. They only learn the basics of handball, how to hold and dribble the ball, find positions on a playground and work until the end in each game situation. But they already know what club is a home one for them.
Sure, not everyone of these100 children who today train in SKA’s primary groups will become a professional handball player in the future. But training sessions help constantly strengthen their health.
Belarusian swimmers return from European Championship with 4 medals
A plane carrying the Belarusian swimming national team landed yesterday at National Airport Minsk.
Belarusian conquerors of pools have returned from Israel's Netanya, which hosted the European Short Course Swimming Championship. The Belarusian swimmers scooped four medals: one silver and three bronze. Such number of awards placed them 15th in the overall standings.
It is noteworthy that in three cases our countrymen set a national record together with winning the medal.
Belarus' Yegor Filipenko makes debut for Málaga CF in Spanish La Liga
The footballer of the Belarusian national team Egor Filipenko has held the first match in La Liga after being included in the starting XI in the away match against Athletic Bilbao.
Filipenko was in an unaccustomed position of defensive midfielder in the starting lineup, while his natural position is central defender. The Belarusian spent 45 minutes on the field and was substituted at half-time for Juanpi.
Belarus claim four medals at European Short Course Championships 2015
On the final day of the European Short Course Swimming Championships (25m), which ended on December 6 in Netanya, Israel, Belarus won a fourth and the last medal.
The award came after the men's team of Belarus (Pavel Sankovich, Ilya Shimanovich, Yevgeny Tsurkin and Anton Latkin) bagged bronze in the combined relay 4x50m, in 1:33.21. Italy won the race while Russia came in second.
On the first day of the competition, a bronze medal was won by the Belarusian men's team in the 4x50m freestyle relay.
Belarus wins third medal at LEN European Short Course Championships 2015
Yevgeny Tsurkin has brought Belarus a third medal at the European Short Course Swimming Championships, which takes place in Netanya, Israel.
Tsurkin stormed to silver in the men's 50m butterfly clocking 22.56 seconds. Gold went Ukraine (22.36) and bronze to Russia (22.69). Another representative of Belarus Pavel Sankovich took 5th place (22.82).
Minsk to host Rhythmic gymnastics Baby Cup December 5
The 16th international rhythmic gymnastics tournament Baby Cup will take place December 5 in Minsk. It will bring together a record number of participants: 400 girls aged from 4 to 10 will perform on the carpet of the Minsk Sports Palace. Competition will begin at 17 o'clock Belarus time.

November 23-29: Belarus sporting events review
Vadim Streltsov is the world champion in weightlifting. The Belarusian won in the category of up to 94kg. In the first exercise, he lifted only 175kg and 6th intermediate place. However, in the clean and jerk, Streltsov narrowed the gap, but also stepped into first place. Its total amount is 407 kilogram.
Belarusian trampoline jumpers brought from a world championship in Denmark six awards. In the team competition, women took silver and men scooped bronze.
