Year of Science: Belarusian biochemistry developments Scientists are working on new inventions in the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus The specialists have recently invented polymerase chain reaction kits to diagnose contagious diseases. DNA diagnostics helps to define diseases and microorganisms in a human body. The scientists made up a set of reagents to define DNA from bioprobes. Besides, radioimmune kits were invented to diagnose thyroid gland diseases, endocrine-metabolic processes and reproductive system diseases.

What do Belarusian and Chinese cultures have in common? The handicraft of vytynanka (a Slavic version of the art form of papercutting, popular in Belarus, Poland and Ukraine) is taught at Vileika ethnographic museum. The exhibition was organized together with Molodechno Music College named after M.K. Aginsky. It tells people about the ancient craft of the ancestors of Belarusians. Windows would be decorated with paper-cut curtains during major celebrations. They would also be hung on walls instead of carpets.

Belarusian scientists breed new earthworm species There are 15 species of earthworms in Belarus. One of this species was bred by Belarusian scientists. These invertebrates play an important role in destruction of organic matters in soil and its enrichment with core plant food compounds. Besides, it is possible to derive most valuable organic manure called vermicompost thanks to the worms. Belarusian scientists bred the new earthworm species for a year and a half.  For this purpose, they had to bring ringed worms from America, Europe, and Russia.
