Belarusian walks off podium after wrong anthem played at European Athletics Championships On July 21 Violetta Skvortsova won gold in the triple jump at the European Athletics Championships. But the victory of Skvortsova had an unexpected continuation. At the award ceremony the Belarusian heard the anthem of another country even though it had to be the anthem of Belarus. Violetta descended from the top step of the podium and refused to go up there even under threat of possible disqualification. As a result the organizers apologized and the second award ceremony of the Belarusian champion took place on July 22.

Belarusian Tatiana Khaladovich fifth in women's javelin at Rio Olympics The Belarusian athlete Tatiana Khaladovich finished the women's javeling final in fifth place at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Belarus' Tikhon into hammer throw final in Rio, Fajdek out Belarus' 40-year-old hammer thrower Ivan Tikhon from the first attempt fulfilled the qualification standard and reached the final of the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. He sent the hammer to the 76.51m mark and topped qualifying table. Ivan Tikhon decided not to take a second attempt. Later, only one athlete was able to fulfill the qualification requirement. This was Pole Wojciech Nowicki, who from the third attempt threw the hammer at 77.64 meters and won qualification in the end.

Kholodovich is the current European champion. One successful attempt was enough for her to enter the final. A result of 63 m guaranteed athletes a place in the final. The Belarusian sent the javelin 63.78m during the first attempt and did not throw anymore. In the qualifying, she took overall 5th place. The best in the qualifying rounds was Polands' Maria Andreichik - 67.11m.

Belarus wins three medals at IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz Belarusian athletes have won three awards at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. First was Elvira Herman, who won the women's 100 meters hurdles (12.85 seconds). Then Maxim Andraloyt earned 8,046 points in the decathlon to take second overall place.

Tatsiana Khaladovich of Belarus wins international athletics tournament in Padua Athlete Tatyana Kholodovich continues to show good form during the Olympic season. After winning the European Championship and a stage of the Diamond League in Monaco the Belarusian topped the ranking table of an international tournament in the Italian Padua. The javelin thrower, in her best attempt, showed a result of 61m 85cm.  Other Belarusian athletes competed in Padua. Ilona Usovich ran the 400m (53.08 sec.) posting the fifth best time. In the triple jump, Dmitry Plotnitsky showed a result of 16m 19cm and also took fifth place.

Belarus wins three medals at European Athletics Championships Three medals were won by Belarusian athletes at the European Athletics Championships, which took place in Amsterdam.  On the last day of the competition, Ivan Tikhon won silver in hammer throwing. In his best attempt, he sent the hammer to a mark of 78 meters and 84 centimeters.  Earlier gold in the javelin event was won by Tatiana Kholodovich. And in the women's 100 meters hurdles, Alina Talay became silver medalist. Reporters greeted the tired but happy victors of the continental championship at the Minsk national airport.

Ivan Tikhon brings Belarus third medal at European Athletics Championships The Belarusian hammer thrower Ivan Tikhon has won a silver medal at the European Athletics Championships. For a long time, during the final competition at the Olympic stadium in Amsterdam, the eminent Belarusian athlete was ranked third with a score of 76m 60 cm. However, in the final attempt, he threw 78m 84cm and thereby guaranteed a silver medal. Poland's athletes Paweł Fajdek (80m 46cm) and Wojciech Nowicki was third (77m 53cm) took the rest of the podium.

Belarusian runner wins ultramarathon in Daugavpils An athlete from Belarus Tatiana Gurskaya has won the 100km ultramarathon in Daugavpils (Latvia). The runner overcame 37 laps spending more than 10 hours. Taking part in the competition were other Belarusian athletes: Vladimir Kandybo, Igor Novitsky, Anatoly Laput and Valery Kruglikov. They ran 50 km, becoming winners in their age groups.

Belarus National Olympic Committee marks 25th anniversary The National Olympic Committee on March 22 marks 25th anniversary. During this time Belarusian athletes as part of the independent team participated in 11 Olympics - six winter and five summer. They have won 91 medals. One of the most triumphant victories in the history of Belarusian sport was the finish of White Lightning Yulia Nesterenko at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The runner won the "royal" distance of the women's 100m.

Belarus' Alina Talay wins 60m hurdles at tournament in Linz Belarusian runner Alina Talay has won the 60 meters hurdles at the international tournament in Linz. In the final race, the Orsha athletics school graduate has shown a time of 7.97 seconds and was ahead of Slovenia's Marina Tomic, whose time was 8.21 seconds.  Third at the Gugl Meeting tournament was Croatian Ivana Lončarek, with 8.25 seconds. Alina Talay, under the guidance of her coach Austrian Philip Winfried, continues to prepare for the Indoor World Championship, which will be held in USA's Portland from 16 to 20 March.

World champion in women's 800m Marina Arzamasova hailed upon return to Belarus Belarusian national athletics team have triumphantly returned home. On Sunday, fans met at the airport bronze medalist of the IAAF World Championships 2015 in Beijing Alina Talai. The Belarusian set a new national record in the women's 100 meters hurdles. On August 31 it was the turn to meet Marina Arzamasova. In Beijing, our runner produced an incredible victory in the women's 800m. With two awards, "gold" and "bronze", the Belarusian team took 14th place in the unofficial medal standings.

Belarusian runner Alina Talay wins 2015 world championships bronze On Friday, she took part in the women's 100m hurdles event. Alina Talay has won world championship bronze in China.  In the women's 100m hurdles she clocked 12.66s (national record) and came in third. Daniel Williams of Jamaica was first (12.57s) and German Cindy Roleder. This is Belarus' first medal at the world championship. Alina is 26 years old. She won the bronze medal of the worlds in 2011 and silver at the 2012 European championships.

Team Belarus to take part in European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi Belarus not long ago sent athletes to Azerbaijan, where they defended the honor of the country at the 1st European Games in Baku. On July 25, the younger national team went to Tbilisi. That city hosted the opening ceremony of the European Youth Festival. Belarus is represented in six of the nine sports: swimming, gymnastics, tennis, athletics, cycling and judo. Expectations are high but there is no pressure on the team.

Minsk bids for hosting 2019 and 2020 European Athletics Championships Minsk has submitted bids for the hosting of the 2019 and 2020 European Athletics Championships. While it is easier with the indoor championship (since Minsk Arena can easily host it) nothing is guaranteed in the case of the summer tournament. The main difficulty is that Dinamo Stadium has been undergoing renovations for several years now. But it is the very arena that is to host the athletics competitions for which Minsk has submitted a bid.

Belarusian students go to the 2015 Summer Universiade Belarusian students have departed for the Summer Universiade. A solemn farewell ceremony for our sports delegation will be held June 29 at the Belarusian State University.  The delegation is composed of representatives of 12 higher educational institutions of the country. The 28th World Summer Universiade will be held from 4 to 14 July in South Korea.

Belarusian Alina Talai takes silver in women's 100m hurdles in Ostrava Belarus runner Alina Talay continues to delight with the results. The Belarusian successfully performed at a tournament of the IAAF World Challenge Meetings, which was held in Ostrava.  In her favorite distance, 100 meters hurdles, she clocked 12.78 seconds to finish second. Talay was slower than American Neville, who set a new record of the competition. Earlier the Belarusian won the 100m hurdles in the Netherlands with 12.70 seconds.

Belarusian runner Alina Talai wins hurdles event in the Netherlands The Belarusian athlete Alina Talay won the prestigious tournament of the IAAF World Challenge Meetings, which stage was held in the Netherlands. She scooped gold in the 100m hurdles.  The Belarusian showed the best time among all participants of the race - 12.70 seconds. The result was a new personal best for the athlete in this event.  It is noteworthy that the event in the Netherlands was Alina Talay's first in the current summer season.

Belarusians bag 5 medals at European Cup Winter Throwing in Portugal The European Cup Winter Throwing finished in Portugal's Leiria. On the final day of the tournament, Belarusian athletes added two awards to the three medals won on the first day of competition. Elena Soboleva won first place in the women's U23 setting a personal record. Alexander Kozlovsky scooped bronze in the U23 javelin. All in all, Belarus won five medals at the European Cup Winter Throwing.    In the women’s U23 shot, Viktoryia Kolb was third. Silver went to Yury Vasilchanka in the men’s U23 hammer.

Domracheva voted Sportswoman of the Year in Belarus The newspaper Sportivnaya Panorama has summed up the traditional voting to determine the winners of the sports year in Belarus. The poll among sports journalists from print and electronic media has been held for the 56th time. Some 106 respondents voted for the best athletes of the year, the best coach and the two teams (in playing and non-playing sports).  Three-time Sochi Olympic champion Darya Domracheva became the best. She was 181 points ahead of the nearest competitor.
