Belarus takes record-high 8th place in 2018 Paralympics medal standings

The Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang ended on March 18. Oleg Shepel, chairman of the Paralympic Committee of Belarus, gave an interview to the TV program Sports Week.

Congratulations. Surely your phone is ringing without stopping...

Oleg Shepel, Chairman of the Paralympic Committee of Belarus:
There are a lot of congratulations. It's nice that the people are watching and supporting our team. This is probably the most important, because when there is connection between the team and the people, and a person with disabilities feels attention from society, this is probably the highest degree of rehabilitation.

You wanted five medals but won 12. Is this a pleasant surprise?

Oleg Shepel:
Based on the results that athletes showed at the World Championship last year, at the World Cup stages, we certainly hoped that the athletes would show a decent result. What they showed is not a surprise, but we did not expect that many medals to be honest.

That is, the results have surpassed all expectations?

Oleg Shepel:
Certainly. This is the best Paralympic Games in Belarus' history in terms of medals in winter sports. 8th place is a very high bar, which will be hard to surpass.

What is the atmosphere and mood in the team now?

Oleg Shepel:
Excellent working atmosphere. All the exciting moments have ended, the Games closed. People are preparing to leave. I am sure that many people will come to meet the team in Minsk. But this is not that same excitement we had during the Paralympics.

Belarusian Paralympicism showed its strength, didn't it?

Oleg Shepel:
Sure. This is the social policy of the state too. We say that we are a socially oriented state. How to prove it? Prove only by results. I always said that if the state invests money, no matter where, in science, sport, culture, production, it must demand results. And the fact that we achieved this result is great! And the fact that the head of state appreciated this is a very big positive thing for us.
