European bison population in Belarus stabilized

A new micropopulation of the European bison is being created in the Dyatlovo district. The first 12 individuals were brought to Lipichanskaya Pushcha. These are bison from Nalibokskaya Pushcha and the Ozery reserve. The animals were carefully selected.

There must be different ages in the micropopulation. The calculation is as follows: three females per one male - this is the key to successful population formation. A temporary enclosure of 7.5 hectares has been created, there is a forest and a meadow, with feeding troughs installed. As soon as the animals get accustomed to the new place they can be let out.

Alexander Kivulya, director of the Dyatlovo forest area:
We invited the staff of the Academy of Sciences. They worked six months in the territory of our forest area, in order to determine a place that would meet all the requirements for the bison to take root here.

The number of these ancient bulls in Belarus has stabilized - they now inhabit the four largest forests of the country. This is the fifth micropopulation in the district of Dyatlovo. By the end of March, three more females will be taken to Lipichanskaya Pushcha.
