Belarus snatches first gold at 2018 Paralympic Games

Belarus has won the first gold medal at the Paralympic Games 2018. Belarusian skier Sviatlana Sakhanenka brought the award.

The athlete won a 15km freestyle race among athletes with visual impairments. This is Sviatlana's second medal at the South Korean Paralympics. Earlier, the Belarusian took bronze in the biathlon sprint.

Skier Yury Holub, in the 20km race, has added silver to the medal collection of Belarus. Before that, he became second in the sprint.

Oleg Shepel, Chairman of the Paralympic Committee of Belarus:
I was pleased with Yury Holub, because 2.5 kilometers prior to the finish line he was fourth, he was behind quite seriously, but then he passed the last lap above all praise. Sveta Sakhanenka did very well, too, because the Ukrainian competitor was improving performance, but the Belarusian managed to keep her position, despite the fact that she broke the stick. This is very cool, because frankly we did not expect such a result. What our athletes have done is a reason for pride.

On the first day of the Paralympic Games, Belarusian athletes won four medals. Now Belarus boasts six medals: one gold, three silver and two bronze.

Belarus ranks 9th in the overall medal standings of the 2018 Paralympic Games.
