First bat shelter opens in Belarus

The first bat shelter in Belarus will be organized in a couple of weeks in the Republican Center for Ecology and Local History.

The public organisation  ‘APB - BirdLife Belarus’ together with the Scientific and Practical Center for Bioresources and the Republican Center for Ecology and Local History have identified the location of the bat shelter with the signing of a tripartite memorandum.

A few months before memorandum the APB- Birdlife Belarus had launched a fund-raising campaign for the shelter arrangement because they needed a refrigerator, supplies and food. For that purpose people raised more than BYN 2,000 (about $1,000).

During winter bats will hibernate in refrigerator in special bags. These bags will be comfortable for bats.

Aleksey Shpak, research assistant at the laboratory of molecular zoology of the Scientific and Practical Center for Bioresources:
Hibernation starts when the air temperature drops below zero. Now winters are relatively warm, which is why bats are active up to New Year. Without energy these animals can die in a couple of days.
