The court acquitted a woman from Vitebsk, Olga Stepanova, who lost child after giving birth at home, the Vitebsk regional court said.

The verdict on the criminal case of inflicting death through imprudence was announced on Thursday in Vitebsk. The defendant was not present at the announcement of the verdict.

"There's lack of evidence of an offense in the case," official representative of the Vitebsk Regional Court, Natalya Platonenko, told media.

On February 17, 2017 Olga gave birth to a girl at home, who died soon after. A criminal case was opened against her. On May 6, 2017, the woman was taken into custody, as investigative authorities had suspicions that she could leave the country.

On September 7, the court of the Zheleznodorozhny district of Vitebsk sentenced Stepanova to six months in prison in a penal settlement, but took into account four months spent by her in the pre-trial detention center and released her. The woman was required to cover about $150 of court costs.

On 3 November 2017, the Vitebsk Regional Court, having considered Stepanova's appeal, quashed the verdict and sent the case for reconsideration. All court proceedings were closed for press.
