Sergei Lavrov on mutual recognition of visas between Belarus and Russia

The agreement on mutual visa recognition between Belarus and Russia may be signed in the nearest time. This information has been confirmed by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a press conference.

The necessity to introduce mutual visa recognition arose at the beginning of 2017, when the 5-day visa-free regime to Belarus was introduced for tourists from 80 countries. Then Russia had to renew passport checks at the Belarusian-Russian border. What is more, the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has given indication to solve the issue as quickly as possible.

Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister:
Russia is for bilateral steps concerning issues of both Belarus and Russia. Therefore, we suggested to coordinate an agreement on mutual visa recognition, which is at a high level of readiness already. Hopefully, it will be signed in the nearest time.

It is quite possible that this agreement will come into force as soon as in the first quarter of the current year, just before the Football World Cup in Russia.
