Paulinka: the main Belarusian theater character

Paulinka: the main Belarusian theater character

Yanka Kupala, a poet, created a strong personality Pavlinka (in Belarusian – Paulinka), which makes this play a treasure of Belarusian art. According to tradition, the theater prizes Crystal Pavlinka were awarded in April 2017. By the way, the heroine of Pavlinka is already very old. However, for Belarusians, she is still young and ready to fight for her future.

The story of Pavlinka began in 1912, when a neighbor of famous Belarusian poet Yanka Kupala inspired him to write a play. She became the image of a Belarusian girl.

40-year-old Raisa Koshelnikova became the first Pavlinka, she played the role of a 19-year-old girl for 20 years. Her voice became the standard for all the following actresses.

Alla Dolgaya, theater and film actress:
I come to the theater, and everyone is waiting for me. Nobody believed that I could become Pavlinka.

But she did. The heroine was refined and always in love. She was just the same in real life.

Alla Dolgaya, theater and film actress:
I'm special for my dad. He wanted me to have a husband with a high position. But I married for love.

The last time Alla Dolgaya came on the stage as Pavlinka at the age of 42. But she always answered the questions about age.

Alla Dolgaya, theater and film actress:
I am always the same age as Pavlinka.

Every generation has its own Pavlinka. Zoya Belokhvostik was Pavlinka in the last 20 years of the XX century.

Her image of Pavlinka was and remains sincere, however, it lives no longer on the stage, but in the heart. Zoya Belokhvostik even put the expressions of play to everyday life.

Zoya Belokhvostik, Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus, actress of the National Academic Yanka Kupala Theater:
I spit in the eyes, and he will say that it's raining.

But for Zoya Belokhvostik Pavlinka is not just a comedy.

Zoya Belokhvostik, Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus, actress of the National Academic Yanka Kupala Theater:
The most important thing is when she decides to jump out of the window, to take this step, walk away from parents, and what happens to her.

Zoya Belokhvostik handed her role to Julia Shpilevskaya after 18 years. Valentina Gartsueva played on stage after Julia.

Valentina Gartsueva, actress of the National Academic Yanka Kupala Theater:
Pavlinka is beautiful, brave and charismatic girl. Quite desperate, but I'm judicious person. So I had to find something new for myself.

Pavlinka is a slim and rather beautiful girl. As well as Ekaterina Aleinikova, who plays the role of Pavlinka today.

Ekaterina Aleinikova, actress of the National Academic Yanka Kupala Theater:
She is sincere and in love with her beloved. I think I know what it is to love and be loved. Therefore, it was very important to express these feelings to the audience.

Pavlinka has been on Belarusian stage more than 70 years, but does not age and remains the standard.

Probably every woman or girl, despite her age, watching the play from the auditorium, once imagined herself in the role of Pavlinka, tried on the long braid and ribbons, waiting for her beloved and argued with her father.

But it is not physical resemblance that is the main thing. Rather, it’s the character peculiar to all Belarusians.
