Belarus brings Francysk Skaryna’s heritage back!

In 2017, Belarus celebrated 500 years of Belarusian book printing. The work on preserving national heritage is still ongoing. The President of Belarus conferred awards for Spiritual Revival on Belarusian art luminaries. One of the prizewinners was the National Library of Belarus for the facsimile replication and promotion of the book heritage of Francysk Skaryna.

This project took several years and experts managed to replicate Francysk Skaryna’s works. Each of the 20 volumes is comprised of pages from all over the world.

Alyona Syrova, a CTV journalist:
Belarussian specialists had to travel thousands of miles and do countless studies to bring Francysk Skaryna’s heritage back to Belarus.

20 volumes consist of 21 books by Francysk Skaryna; each volume has a full leather binding and gilded pages. Currently there are merely 500 Francysk Skaryna’s printed fragments preserved. The specialists had to visit several countries to match these fragments.

Alexander Susha, deputy director of research and publishing of the National Library of Belarus:
You can see the margin notes in the books, handwritten copies of some fragments, engravings, drop caps and initials which make a certain impression on any person who sees Francysk Skaryna’s books for the first time.

The interest in Francysk Skaryna’s books now is as great as it was 500 years ago. It should be mentioned that it was the National Library of Belarus team’s idea to make it happen as its 95-year-old history is connected with the study of the first book printer’s life.

Roman Motulsky, director of the National Library of Belarus:
The target audience of this project is not only Belarus but the whole world as we want to prove our long existence on this planet and to show our history and culture.

The volumes are stored in the UN, the Vatican Library and the British Library. October 2017, Swiss Library of Eastern Europe became the owner of such a treasurable possession.

The facsimile replication was brilliantly carried out. Now every citizen of Belarus can become closer to Francysk Skaryna’s works and read ‘The Bible by Francysk Skaryna’ in the mother tongue.
