Exclusive footage of the Belarusian nuclear power plant construction

Exclusive footage: the television crew was allowed in the turbine room of the Belarusian nuclear power plant for the first time.

The construction has the size of a five-storey building, it contains several levels.

It is here that the nuclear reactor’s heat energy is converted into electric energy.

The main object here is a turbine.

The height of its rotor is impressive, higher than human.

The total weight will be 2,500 tons. It's like the 5 largest, fully loaded aircraft.

The length, together with the generator, will be 70 meters.

It is comparable to a 20-storey building horizontally.

In general, the main equipment of the first power unit has already been installed.

By the end of the year, it is planned to clean the open reactor with water.

It sounds terrifying, but, in fact, it's just a cleaning of the pipelines of those systems that are connected to the reactor. The goal is to clean them of trash, dross and test the equipment.

Now the work is carried out at almost all sites and facilities of nuclear power plant, at 123 out of 130.

About 5,000 builders are involved, 40 subcontracting organizations. It is estimated that the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will cost about $11 billion.

The plant should be paid off in fifteen years after launch.

Nevertheless, the reactor system’s service time is at least six decades.

All process of creating a nuclear plant is accompanied by scientists from the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research "Sosny". Starting from the choice of location and ending with the commissioning.

Vyacheslav Kuvshinov, Laboratory of Nuclear Physics and Security Problems, NAS of Belarus:
New tasks are emerging, which are increasingly focused on the final stage of construction and launch of the plant. In 2018, as we know, fuel will be delivered to the nuclear power plant. From this moment, the station becomes a dangerous object.

Fuel will be delivered from Russia.

It will be delivered by the end of 2018, and be loaded into the reactor in the summer of 2019 with the help of this crane.

It is just one from the huge range of giant lifting structures that are now involved in the construction of the power units.

What is happening at the nuclear power plant was shown to Belarusian and foreign journalists on October 12.

Nuclear power plant is a successful investment in energy independence.

Due to the plant, electricity tariffs will be reduced by 15-20%. Belarus will be able to reduce gas imports by 5 billion cubic meters per year. Today, 95% of electricity is generated from it.

Europeans are very interested in whether the plant and its project are safe. I must say I am very impressed: it is built according to international standards, parameters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Commission.

Stress tests were conducted at the BelNPP, and numerous commissions and experts visited it.

Everything and everybody show: the nuclear power plant is safe.

As well as the project itself - NPP-2006. The most advanced means and technologies, 4 physical barriers are a reliable shield against radioactive substances for the environment. All security systems duplicate each other.

That's what would happen if the tube of one of the steam generators broke off, and the water from the first circuit got into the second one, and there is a possibility of radioactive contamination of the latter.

In this situation, the power unit is stopped. The simulator gives an opportunity to work out this situation in practice.

This is an exact copy of the console, by which the power unit is controlled.

The location of the instruments and their color are identical.

Vladimir Gorin, deputy chief engineer for personnel training at the BelNPP:
Our task is to work out possible regimes for commissioning of the plant and those moments that may occur. At this stage, we are working together with experienced instructors from the Russian Novovoronezh training center.

All modes are worked out - from normal to emergency.

And here it is very important to cooperate with each other. There are five of us on any shift: one is watching the reactor, others are monitoring the turbines. The work is closely monitored by the chief and the psychologist.

Vladimir Gorin, deputy chief engineer for personnel training at the BelNPP:
We have a psycho-physiological support laboratory. This laboratory provides us with the necessary assistance in the personnel selection and the placement of these personnel in workplaces. At the station, the shift consists of people who have experience in operating in thermal power, they passed additional training and retraining in Ivanovo and Obninsk nuclear power institutes in the Russian Federation.

Plus, they were trained at the 6th power unit of the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant.

It’s forbidden to show the faces of people who are training now.  

After all, this is the personnel of the real control panel.

There are 40 people. Their qualification will be increased constantly; training will not end with the commissioning of the plant. Each employee will spend 100 hours a year in the training center. Although, the probability of a serious accident is estimated as 1 in a million years, anyway, they are preparing for all situations. Scientists model them, calculate each process and action.

Alexander Trifonov, Deputy General Director of the Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research - Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus:
Our task is to eliminate the human factor from the possible disruption of the nuclear power plant operation.

Security systems are already included in the plant itself.

For example, if some emergency happens, then the operator is forbidden to intervene for 30 minutes, all internal security systems work. It is necessary to simulate everything, because we cannot, as they say, experiment on a real object.

The most incredible coincidence of circumstances is laid in the scenario of command post exercise to eliminate a possible radiation threat.

On October 18-19, they were held in the Minsk region and at the nuclear power plant itself. It is just impossible in real life: the explosion of the substation, the failure of security systems, the destruction of the reactor body, the personnel trapped under the rubble.

Special equipment, aviation and robots were used to stop all this.

As a result, all five danger spots were eliminated in 15 minutes.

The first site that was handed over to the legal construction at the BelNPP was the emergency fire and rescue unit, which was fully provided with the most advanced equipment and highly professional personnel.

Marcin Antczak, observer (Poland):
We have seen that these practical exercises are the best. In Poland, we also have such trainings.

We will return to our republic, we will pass it on to the experts.

We hope that such a situation will never happen, but all services - fire services, MES - should do such practical exercises, as we saw today.

Environmental observations are constantly conducted in the area of the BelNPP: the state of air, underground and surface water is controlled. NPP will not pollute them.

There are no carbon dioxide emissions, nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides.

It is estimated that with the commissioning of the plant, greenhouse gas emissions will decrease by 10%, by 7-10 million tons per year. Closed cooling system prevents pollutants from entering the river Viliya. And special fish protective constructions are created in the place of water intake.

The safety rules for handling radioactive waste have already been approved, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has established a plant guard group. About a thousand people have already been employed at the nuclear power plant, including about 70 specialists with experience in nuclear facilities in Russia and Ukraine.

The launch of the first power unit is planned for 2019.

At the end of 2017 Belarusian scientists will discuss issues related to this.

We have the tasks of commissioning of the nuclear power plant, scientific support, conducting safety assessments.
