Aryna Sabalenka named Belarus' Athlete of the Year

19-year-old tennis player Aryna Sabalenka and 33-year-old freestyle skier Anton Kushnir became the best athletes of Belarus in 2017.

103 journalists from 44 media outlets, sports clubs, etc took part in the annual survey. One respondent is a freelancer.

Everyone was offered to name the top three male and female athletes; for 1st place an athlete was awarded three points, for 2nd place two points and one for third.

Sabalenka scored 153 points, receiving 35 first, 19 second and 10 third places. Kushnir has 111 points (17, 22, 16).

In 2017, Sabalenka together with Aliaksandra Sasnovich brought the women's national team to the final of the Federation Cup.

In the WTA rating, Sabalenka rose from 137th to 73rd place during one year. She won a WTA Challenger tournament in Mumbai (India) in the singles and a doubles victory in Taiwan. She also reached the final of the WTA tournament in Tianjin (China), where she lost one of the world's leading tennis players Maria Sharapova from Russia.

Olympic champion in 2014 Kushnir won three stages of the World Cup in freestyle skiing, he finished last season third in the overall standings.

35-year-old World Trampoline Champion Tatyana Petrenya took second place in the poll among women - 112 points (19, 22, 11). In third was the 25-year-old world champion in wrestling in the category up to 53 kg Vanessa Kolodinskaya - 89 points (19, 8, 16).

Yuri Shcherbatsevich, 33-year-old European champion in shooting (small-bore rifle), has 33 points (17, 7, 2) and took second place, while third went to 36-year-old  road cyclist Vasily Kiriyenko (8, 13, 13).
