5G may be introduced in Belarus by 2019 European Games

The telecom operator Velcom became the official operator of communication of the II European Games, which will be held in Minsk in June 2019.

The mobile carrier will provide guests and participants of the Games with voice communication and high-speed Internet. Velcom will also help with the organization and promotion of the competition.

"European Games are a world-class sporting event. Velcom, as part of a large group of telecommunications companies operating around the world, is pleased to support the Games in Minsk and provide all participants with better infrastructure and communication services. We believe that the Games is a unique opportunity for the entire country to demonstrate support for pan-European values ​​and the leading positions of Belarus as a sporting nation," Velcom Director-General Helmut Duhs said.

"Agreements with Velcom for us is like a Christmas present. On the one hand, this is a significant help in the functioning of the Games' directorate, on the other our cooperation shows that it is beneficial for potential sponsors to popularize the II European Games together, taking into account the scale of the event," said Georgy Katulin, director of the Foundation "Directorate for the II European Games 2019".

Velcom also said it would try to implement not only 4G but also 5G by the beginning of the European Games in order to provide the participants and guests with Internet and voice communication of the highest quality.

II European Games will be held in Minsk from June 21 to 30, 2019. More than 4,000 athletes will compete for 198 sets of medals in 15 sports. About 8,000 official participants are expected to attend the event, and the competitions will be broadcast to 160 countries.
