Azarenka gets 2018 Australian Open wild card

Former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka has received a wild card at the Australian Open, which will be held in Melbourne from 15 to 28 January 2018.

Now the Belarusian tennis player takes 210th place in the WTA rating, but the organizers of the tournament took into account her previous achievements and, in particular, two titles at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013.

"Now Vika was in a very difficult situation, and we, as we can, try to help her," said the director of the competition Craig Tiley.

"As a two-time Australian champion, he was granted admission for the January battles. We are very much looking forward to seeing her here in Melbourne."

Victoria's reaction did not take long to wait: "I'm so glad. This is my favorite tournament. I won it twice and always felt comfortable on the courts and in the city. It will be a difficult year, and I am sincerely grateful to Craig, his team for their understanding and support. I cannot wait for a new meeting with my Australian fans."
