Belarus' minister: Sport should be out of politics

Minister of Sports and Tourism of Belarus Alexander Shamko is sure that sport should be out of politics.

"Sport should be out of politics. The Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation supported the statement that was made in favor of the Russian team," Shamko told media on Friday.

"Sport should have only sports aspects - if someone has allowed blunders, then there should be individual responsibility. Everyone should answer for themselves only, and the principle of collective responsibility should not be used in this situation," the minister said.

In his opinion, when responsibility is placed on national teams, this is not always correct.

"Many athletes have a short sports age, and depriving him of the only opportunity to compete at the Olympics is wrong," the minister said.

According to him, the athlete participates in the Olympics not only for their own ambitions - it is also an opportunity to enter the competitions with the national flag.

"Not just act under the white flag, but represent their own country. When it's all taken away from you are you are innocent, isn't this confusing?" Shamko noted.

"Belarus is for pure sport, and a lot of work has been done by Belarus in this regard," the minister said.

According to him, the situation in the sport should not be politicized, and taking medals after five or eight years is not quite a healthy competition.
