Azarenka asks wild card for 2018 Australian Open

Azarenka asks wild card for 2018 Australian Open

Ex-world No.1 Victoria Azarenka asked for a wild card from the organizers of the Australian Open, said New York Times journalist Christopher Clary.

In November, the Belarusian announced that she was going to return to the court in January 2018 in Auckland (New Zealand). The tournament will be held from 1 to 6 January.

"Victoria Azarenka does not appear on the entry list of the Australian Open, but she is going to play there. She asked for a wild card. The chances for getting it are quite high considering that she is a two-time champion of the tournament (in 2008 and 2011)," a VKontakte group dedicated to the athlete quotes the journalist as saying.

Clary noted that in case of refusal Azarenka can get into the main round of the tournament through qualification.

In late November - early December, two coaches left Azarenka: Michael Jones and Ashcon Rezazadeh.

Now the athlete lives in the USA with her son Leo. Azarenka is waiting for the court's decision on child custody.

The Australian Open starts on January 15 and ends on January 28.
