Belarus to host Europe vs USA athletics match in September 2019

A track-and-field match between Europe and the USA will take place on September 9-10, 2019 at Minsk stadium Dinamo, which is now being renovated, said the president of the European Association of Athletics Federations, the author of the idea Svein Arne Hansen (Norway) at a press conference in the Belarusian capital on November 14.

According to him, participating in the event, which will precede the World Athletics Championships in Qatar, will be 72 athletes from Europe and the United States plus relay teams. At least 10 will represent the host country, Belarus. The program includes running of all kinds at a distance to 3,000m, jumps, throwing and relay races.

Similar match meetings have not been held for more than 40 years (in the 1970s, USSR and US athletes competed).

The signing of the contract for the match is expected by April 2018, Hansen said. The main issues have already been resolved.

"Negotiating with the Americans is both difficult and simple at the same time. In this case, they expressed great interest," Hansen said.

The president of the association noted that the Belarusian side immediately reacted to his initiative, otherwise other candidates would be considered, for example, London or Oslo.

It is planned that in 2020 the second match will be held in the US, and in 2021 again in Europe. "But first we need to see how everything goes in Minsk," Hansen said.

The Minister of Sports and Tourism Alexander Shamko said this will be a "grandiose event of a global scale."
