Belarus local elections official date confirmed: February 18, 2018

Elections to local Councils of Deputies will be held in Belarus on February 18, 2018. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on November 14 supported the Central Election Commission's proposal on this date.

Nuances of elections to the local Councils of Deputies were considered at the working meeting of the head of state with the chairwoman of the CEC Lidia Yermoshina. In particular, they raised issues of financing and economical spending of the allocated funds, as well as a calendar of activities and an institution of observers.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus:
The Central Election Commission should by law organize elections: ballots, seminars, training of district commission leaders. And we can save money on various things. We have many things left from the previous elections, some booths and so on. But the main thing is the salary, the salary of those people who will be involved in these elections. I tell you frankly that it is necessary to save money, but we do have the funds for these elections allocated in the budget, so don't save money at the expense of those people who will work at these elections. The salary of people connected with elections is a sacred thing.

We will not hide anything. Those who are ready to go to the elections must go and take part, in accordance with the law. The government will create all conditions for the elections to be worthy. I ask you to see to it that the whole process is at a worthy level.

Lidia Yermoshina, Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus:
The draft of the decree is in your folder. I ask you to sign it today. And from that moment we will start the 2018 local election campaign in Belarus. The maximum working day for signing the decree is November 17, that is Friday. Therefore, I ask at the beginning of the working week, so that both regions and political parties, and public associations have time to put forward this week their members of territorial election commissions. We give them three days to be in more favorable conditions. This is our tradition.
