We can't make so many mistakes, BATE manager about defeat at Köln

"To expect a positive result, we should not make so many mistakes," said BATE head coach Alexander Ermakovich at a press conference after a big defeat 2:5 at German Köln in the fourth round of the Europa League group stage.

According to Ermakovich, in the first half, which ended in favor of BATE 2:1, the team acted well, taking advantage of free zones.

"But we played poorly defensively. Of the five balls, three were from the counter and two from set pieces. I will not say that we did not expect such actions from the opponents, but they very skillfully took advantage of our mistakes. What is forgiven in Belarus, in the domestic championship, is not forgiven in the European arena," said the coach.

Commenting on the unsuccessful week in the performance of BATE (a draw against outsiders Naftan and current defeat) Ermakovich noted that in such situations the team should show its character. On November 6 BATE are going to Zhodino for the game against Torpedo-BelAZ, which promises to be very difficult. BATE desperately needs to win, otherwise they lose chances for the title.

The head coach of FC Köln Peter Stöger noted that his team started the match well, opening the scoring, but then allowed the opponents to return to the game, conceding two goals.

"We were to blame for this. But in the second half we showed a high morale. We did not give up, we were very active and productive in the attack. We began to get something that did not work out before. The opponent had problems in defense, although they also attacked dangerously," said the Austrian specialist.

According to Stöger, the team now has at least some chances for European spring, but he would prefer to talk more about this before Christmas.

"We knew we could win at BATE, but we still have a very difficult match with Arsenal," he said.

The bright spot in the match is an overhead kick and goal by Nikolai Signevich (please watch the video).

Standings in group H: Arsenal - 10 points (goal difference 8-3), Crvena Zvezda - 5 (2-2), BATE - 4 (6-10), Köln - 3 (6-7).

In the penultimate fifth round on November 23 BATE will host Crvena Zvezda while the Germans will take on Arsenal at home. The two best teams of the group will reach the last 32 round.
