Ref blunder may cost BATE gold in Belarusian Premier League

Football club BATE has missed out on a victory at the end of the match of round 27 of the Belarusian Premier League. The Borisov club played with against outsiders Naftan, which is last in the league and will surely leave the top flight next season. Despite dominating the play BATE drew the game 1:1 and lost 2 important points.

Chairman of the referee committee of the Belarusian Football Federation Oleg Chikun said that referee Yevgeny Naumov mistakenly pointed to the spot in the match against Naftan. Chikun said the ref's decision was a blunder.

According to him, during the attack BATE defender Vitaly Gaiduchik, who was in the penalty area, "clearly hides his hand behind his back, putting forward his shoulder."

"This is exactly how the referee sees the movement of the hand back, while not seeing clearly where the ball hit," says Oleg Chikun in the football federation's TV program "Referee with us."

"After that [the referee] mistakinly decides that this was a handball."

Yevgeny Naumov received an unsatisfactory rating for his work in the BATE v Naftan match. It will be taken into account during licensing for the next season.

Now BATE are third place in the standings and is five points behind Shakhter Soligorsk three rounds before the end of the championship. Dinamo Minsk are second, one point ahead of BATE.
