President Lukashenko holds meeting on changing farming approaches in Vitebsk region

The finishing line of the harvesting campaign and the preparation of soils for the new harvest. The President held a meeting on the autumn field works. Representatives of the agriculture sector, the State Control Committee and the authorities of the northern region were invited to the discussion.

Alexander Lukashenko gave indications to cardinally change the approach towards farming in the Vitebsk region. Because of the climate here the harvesting campaign is held later as it should be. Success was discussed as well. The harvest of 2017 exceeded the results of 2016.

This farm in the Vitebsk region decided to experiment. Some 35 hectares of hybrid rye were sown here. Big areas will now be seeded with yielding peas. The weather is good for this.

Konstantin Pochepko, deputy director general of agriculture at “Vitebskoblgaz”:
It is all aimed at providing compound feed mill with our own material.

Quite often the crops ripen a lot later in the northern region rather than in other regions. It is all because of the soil and the climate of the area.

Ivan Boris, head of farming, plant breeding and fodder production department of the Vitebsk Region Executive Committee:
We are decreasing the number of fields for corn and expanding the fields for growing perennial grasses as clover, for instance.

The perfection of cultivation areas was discussed at the Palace of Independence on October 23. The representatives of the agricultural sectors have been invited to participate in the discussion. The issue is topical.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus:
We need to go for a serious reform of the agricultural complex of the Vitebsk region. We agreed to begin with the structure of the cultivation areas. We need to cardinally change the approach towards farming in the Vitebsk region. Next year we must solve this problem once and for all, especially with the structure of cultivation areas, with the orientation at agricultural production structure. The products we are going to produce there: milk, beef, pork, poultry, considering the climate, weather conditions of the Vitebsk region and land fertility, not only the level of agriculture, but the level of farming of the Vitebsk region. Primarily, I mean workers.

I want to ask you to do without eye washing. If you do not know, then don’t say. You won’t be able to change the situation with reports on the GDP of this or that product or figure.

The main thing is money. If there is money, you work well and it has a payoff-well done. If there is nothing of this, what can I say about the surplus and the vendibility of milk, and so on and so forth. It is important for efficient management of the production. However, it is not my function. This function must end at the level of a governor, and then it should be reported to you. Fine, reported to me as well, if you are informing on the GDP. The main thing is performance indicators, and here they cannot be added.

There is a concrete plan. The agricultural complexes intend increasing the production of milk, pork by 2020, the production of beef will increase up to 83 thousand tons. Every region of the country was considered. Evidently, it is necessary to produce something that could be sold.

Leonid Zayats, Agriculture and Food Minister of Belarus:
The grain cultivation areas are being cut down on, the areas for perennial bean grasses and rape are being expanded.

About 10 million tons. This is the total weight of the harvest in Belarus in 2017. And that is together with rape and corn. The results are better than in 2016. As a whole, the crop yield increased by about two hundred kilograms per hectare. Nevertheless, agrarians still have a lot of work to do. Alexander Lukashenko gave indications to finish the harvesting campaign as soon as possible.

Alexander Lukashenko:
It would be good to finish the harvesting campaign by November 7. There will be corn left for seeds; maybe you will have time to clear it, and some beets. The future harvest is the lift of autumn plowing. It is necessary to work every day. At the moment the work here is organized badly. If to believe the statistics, half of the plowed areas are in the Vitebsk region, no matter how strange it may seem, most of the autumn plowing has been lifted in the Vitebsk region. Probably, it should be like this, because in spring in the Vitebsk region, as people say, it is impossible not to wear boots in fields. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the fields for sowing spring crops today.

The head of the Agriculture Ministry says that at the moment 48% of corn fields and 71% of sugar beet fields have been cleared. At the moment there are 220 hectares of flax in the fields at the moment. The vegetables are planned to be cleared by November 7. However, the attention now should be paid to the preparation of soils for the spring field works. The future harvest will depend on the quality of the soil.

Leonid Zayats:
The problem today remains-to lift autumn plowing. More than one million hectares need plowing. Considering the weather conditions, the very rainy weather, the soil is too wet. Therefore, there is a necessity to use energy-packed tractors to pull out machines with beets, potatoes, corn. For this reason we involve tractors in these kinds of activities which were not planned.

The last hectares of corn are left to be cleared at “Svisloch” farm-the traditional leader in the Grodno region. This year it is on the first place in crop yield. They are not against experimenting here. The try hybrid crops, calculate dosage of fertilizers for every field.

Sergei Savchik, head agronomist at “Svisloch” farm:
We choose only highly intensive and high productivity hybrids of rape. Each variety is individual in its development.

Such outcomes are results of hard work of every agrarian, of the technologies, Belarusian selection and developments of machine engineers. Thanks to such work, agricultural records will be set. It means that the harvest of 2018 will be even richer.
