BATE earn three points against Koln in Europa League first leg

BATE Borisov have narrowly defeated the German Koln 1:0 in the home match of the Europa League on October 19 at Borisov Arena in front of 12,000 spectators.

Only the victory in this match promised to leave the teams real chances to continue the fight for entering the playoffs. Both rivals were ready to fight and had decent chances but the only goal decided the winner.

10 minutes into the second half, BATE's Alexei Rios was the quickest in the German penalty area after a Mirko Ivanic pass.

After the game, BATE coach Alexander Ermakovich noted that the team played against Koln as planned and thus there are still chances of qualifying.

BATE manager added, however, that his charges could not keep up with Koln's pace in the first half.

Peter Stöger, Köln's manager, noted that the game was equal despite the result.

"The rivals reacted to dangerous situations and took advantage of our mistakes. The Borisov club played well today," Stöger said.

In another match of the third round of Group H, Serbian Crvena Zvezda hosted English Arsenal and lost with the same score 0:1.

Arsenal has 9 points out of the 9 possible (goal difference 8-3), Crvena Zvezda are still second with 4 points (2-2), BATE are third on 4 points (4-5) and Köln are last without any points and a goal difference of 1-5.

In the next round on November 2, BATE will travel to Köln for the reverse fixture, while Arsenal hosts Crvena Zvezda.
