Belarus’ Gomel hosting international conference on conservation of forest genetic resources

Belarusian developments on protecting forests will be taken on board abroad. Geneticists from 18 countries are searching for the answer to a question in Gomel: how to preserve the green covering in the conditions of the global climate change.

The problem of global warming has no boundaries, and today many countries are facing serious ecological problems.

Petro Lakyda, professor of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine:
The ranges of the main breeds change. And today geneticists and plant selection breeders need to think about what varieties or new kinds must be implemented to this or that region, so that forest treasures remain.

Alexander Kovalevich, director of the Institute of Forest, the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus:
If in 1994 Belarus produced 5.4 million cubic meters of forest, today-in 2017-the country produces 21 million cubic meters. You can imagine how quickly the consumption of forest increased.

The problem of preserving forests in Europe and on other continents is topical as never before. At the meeting in Gomel scientists intend to work out a joint strategy of protection.
