Belarusian MP about West 2017: We already have soldier of the future

The TV program "Week" talked with MP Sergei Bobrikov, who for several years headed the Military Academy, about the Belarusian military training West 2017 and the stir it caused.

There is such a phrase: "If you want peace, prepare for war." Is it relevant today?

Sergei Bobrikov, deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus:
The defense capability of the state is always assessed looking at its armed forces. So you have to keep the powder dry.

We are now in the middle of West-2017. They caused nervous reaction of some of our neighbors, and, in principle, of the Western world. Why did this happen, in your opinion?

Sergei Bobrikov:
This is an artificial exaggeration. There was nothing like that when similar exercises were held several years ago. Someone wants to attract attention to themselves, someone wants some economic help from this, and someone wants to refresh their political face. This interest is clearly artificial.

What does the army teach?

Sergei Bobrikov:
On the example of the Military Academy, there are three levels: strategic, operational and tactical. Let's start with the tactical one. A young man enters the academy. The first is independence, a sense of elbow, it's honesty, truthfulness, the ability to work independently. This is taught by the tactical level. The command-staff faculty faces other tasks. Learning is not what to do, but how to think. And at the strategic level there are tasks of state military administration.

What is the most difficult thing in military exercises?

Sergei Bobrikov:
In military exercises, on the contrary, it is easy, because drills is the crown of training of staffs and troops. All the prep work is painstaking and thorough. And when everything is thought out in detail, when everything is put together in one mechanism, the staff works, the tasks are set, the troops carry out these tasks - this is very important, it is very useful for the troops. No wonder they say: "The field is a soldier's academy". It is during these drills that the ability of the troops to perform tasks is tested.

The soldier of the future is a person who understands electronic things; is this a non-standard thinker?

Sergei Bobrikov:
The soldier of the future already exists. Everyone says about the youth: "It has become some kind of bad." It is not bad, but just different. We just don't get these young people. We do not understand that we ourselves were once young. The soldier of the future already exists, this is a soldier who serves in Belarusian armed forces. We have good guys. When they get into an extreme situation, including in the army, our guys prove they are reliable. We know that this is a good shift. We believe in our youth. We know that these are good guys and girls. These are real defenders of our country.

There are ratings of the armed forces. What is the position of Belarus?

Sergei Bobrikov:
The most important rating for the Belarusian army is that we have lived in peace for many years. And equate the army, who is stronger, who is more powerful ... Our army is compact, mobile; it corresponds to the risks, challenges and threats that exist around Belarus. Our army allows us to live in peace and corresponds to the economic capabilities of our country.
