Belarusian embroidered shirt vyshyvanka: How did new marital status of beauties influence their costumes?

The main things in life of people from the village Neglyubka have always been reflected in the national costume. We already know the way young and unmarried women dressed up. Now we will tell you about bride’s clothes.

At the beginning of the 20th century, weddings in the village Neglyubka were organized according to longstanding traditions.

There was a tradition to weep over a bride that parted from the circle of her young friends and entered the world of married women. This influenced a bride’s costume. There was almost no red ornament on her shirt.

Red ornaments appear on a bride’s shirt on the second day. At the same time, she changes her headwear: she gets a kerchief with decoration and composition resembling a rushnyk (an embroidered towel).

One more important detail that was added to the bride’s costume was a paniova (a woolen skirt). Girls wove it for themselves.

This required certain skills. Paniova was a part of a costume that was difficult to make. Today there are more than 25 names of paniova’s ornament. Red tone prevailed in paniova’s ornament of a married woman.

In the Neglyubka village, wedding costumes were decorated with beadworks, which ornament was the same as the one on a bride’s shirt. Ethnographers have been trying to find a meaning of these decorations for a long time. It turned out that long ago girls from the tribe Radimichs put a lot of meaning into signs on the jewelry.

A new marital status of a beauty was reflected in her costume. Each detail had both a sacral significance and a practical application.
