Belarus to create vegetable and fruit stabilization fund

Belarus has started harvesting vegetables. Most will go on sale, and something will remain in vegetable storage warehouses until next summer. Thus, a stabilization fund is being created.

In recent years, dozens of new vegetable stores have been built in Belarus. Thanks to this, Belarusians can eat domestic products from fields until new crops.

Harvesting of vegetables in the Kirawsk district began with beets. It traditionally ripens earlier.

Ivan Fedotov, agronomist:
This year we planted a hybrid of Boltardy beetroot. It has good yields. We have an average of 397 centners per hectare. We are harvesting it now because it's high time. The beet has commercial appearance, which is optimal.

During a day the local farm harvests 30 tons of root crops. Most will go on sale, but the rest will be put on long-term storage to the stabilization fund.

This is what storage rooms look like. Several rows of containers are piled on top of each other. Other cells will start to fill up in a couple of days - with potatoes, carrots, onions, and cabbage. Each culture has separate apartments and special climatic conditions are created.

For beet, the optimum temperature regime is a bit above zero degrees and 95% humidity. Onions, on the contrary, need more heat and less moisture. Cabbage is stored at negative temperatures. This is monitored automatically by refrigeration units with evaporators.

Vladimir Rusanov, engineer:
There are GOSTs (national standards in Belarus - note by and terms of storage of each product. Usually we keep it a bit longer, because we have a stabilization fund, and if we are supposed to keep it until June, then we will do that.

In 2017, the volume of the stabilization fund in the Mogilev region will be slightly less than in the past. Trading networks are trying to create their own reserves too. The task of the state stabilization fund is to provide hospitals, schools, and kindergartens with the necessary products. This beet can be used to cook borscht or salad, until the next summer.
