Sweden down Belarus 4:0 in World Cup qualifier

Sweden down Belarus 4:0 in World Cup qualifier

Belarus lost to Sweden at home 0:4 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification at Borisov Arena. Both teams suffered away defeats in the previous round: Belarusians lost to Luxembourg (0:1), while Sweden were downed by Bulgaria (2:3).

Only in the starting 15 minutes did Belarusian footballers play on equal terms, and then followed ridiculous mistakes in the defense, which resulted in three goals. In the 18th minute Emil Forsberg opened the scoring, in 6 minutes Christoffer Nyman added a second one and on 37 minutes Marcus Berg made it 0:3.

Then the Swedes calmed down and allowed Belarusians to create a couple of chances, which were unsuccessful.

During the break, Belarus' head coach Igor Kriushenko made only one substitution: Pavel Nekhaychik made way replaced by Stanislav Drahun. Then Pavel Savitsky and Artem Bykov appeared on the pitch but this in no way improved the play.

At the end of the game one of the attacks of the Swedes resulted in a penalty against Belarus, Andreas Granqvist scoring from 11 meters and setting the final score - 4:0.

In other matches of the 8th round of qualifying group A, the Dutch team in Amsterdam defeated Bulgaria 3:1.

A sensation happened in Toulouse where Group A leaders France could not score against underdogs Luxembourg - 0:0.

Tournament positions after 8 matchdays: France - 17 points (goal difference - 15-5), Sweden - 16 (18-7), Netherlands - 13 (16-11), Bulgaria - 12 (13-17), Luxembourg - 5 (7-17), Belarus - 5 (4-16).

The penultimate 9th round will be held on October 7: Belarus take the Netherlands, while Sweden will play at home against Luxembourg. France take on Bulgaria.

The group round tournament in group A will finish on October 10 with three matches: France v Belarus, Netherlands v Sweden, Luxembourg v Bulgaria.
