Dinamo Minsk lose to Jokerit in KHL opener

New season brings new hopes. On August 23, Dinamo Minsk held its first match of the 10th regular championship of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) against Jokerit at Minsk Arena.

Gordy Dwyer's Dinamo did not have a good game from the start, Jokerit enjoying man advantage during the first and second periods.

Andrei Stepanov, striker of HC Dinamo Minsk:
We are trying to eliminate penalties. Even during preseason we had a lot of penalties back in Riga and we knew about it. They break the game. The guys who play in the minority get very tired. It's very difficult to win a match when you have that many penalties.

By the first break Minsk were 0:2 behind. Quinton Howden replied with one goal in the second.

But in the third stanza something went wrong and Jokers turned almost every mistake of Dinamo into a goal. The Finnish club's 18-year-old forward Eeli Tolvanen made a hat-trick. As a result, Dinamo will want to forget this 1:6 defeat as soon as possible.

Andrei Stepanov:
First of all, I want to apologize to the fans who came to support us today, for such hockey. We do not have the right to play at home like this. We turned out to be not at all ready for the match, so I apologize. We have drawn conclusions. We'll play much better, because it's not good. We ourselves are ashamed of our today's game.

Evgeny Lisovets, defenseman of HC Dinamo (Minsk):
We began to make mistakes. I will not say that this is fatigue, just stupid mistakes and that's all. We understand everything perfectly. We have to work, work and work a lot.

Charles Linglet, striker of HC Dinamo Minsk:
It's very hard psychologically: 1:3, 1:4. You look at the scoreboard, and realize you have too little time to reply. Jokerit is one of the best teams in the League. Although this is not an excuse. It was necessary to continue to attack. But the puck did not stick to our sticks. We lost a lot of pucks. Not our best period. But I'm sure that we will play better in our next game.

Dinamo are yet to play two home matches against Vityaz on August 25 and CSKA on August 27.
