Oleg Novitsky's exclusive interview to Stolichnoe Televidenie Channel

CTV correspondent Alena Syrova met with cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky during his visit to Belarus. What does the most "starry" Belarusian of the modern times dream about? What does he think about Belarusian cosmonautics? Who helps him post photos on Instagram, which has more than 40,000 subscribers?

Oleg Viktorovich, first of all, thank you very much for agreeing to meet with us. I know, you came to your homeland not so long ago, and the schedule is quite busy. The weather is hot so here's the Belarusian cranberry drink - you said that you love it.

Oleg Novitsky, cosmonaut:
Thank you. Yes, I love and do not hide it.

The first time you returned from space to the homeland, you were attacked by journalists. This time, probably, there were even more... Have you had time to rest?

Oleg Novitsky:
I arrived only on Tuesday, and, in my opinion, everything is just beginning. The first who met me were the neighbors, they met me very warmly like always. That is, they brought a table straight to the street and prepared a loaf of bread. One neighbor, Alesya, came out in national clothes. It was great, nice.

What do you plan to do on vacation?

Oleg Novitsky:
I think, I will stay in Minsk a maximum of a couple of days. And then no one will ever find me here, not a single journalist. This is because will rest exactly as I always wanted - a forest, maybe hunting or fishing. We'll see.

Do you like fishing?

Oleg Novitsky:
I love hunting more. Fishing is also cool but I'm not that good at it. I like to rest on the river or in the forest.

And what is your biggest game that you managed to shoot?

Oleg Novitsky:
It was a deer. I was lucky that a deer came out just in front of me.

Was it luck or huge work that helped you become a cosmonaut?

Oleg Novitsky:
I think both. But initially it was most likely a coincidence. Because I had to be exactly at that moment at the Air Force Academy in Monino and by chance it was exactly the time when cosmonauts were needed. This selection is not held every year.

Have you dreamt about sky since childhood?

Oleg Novitsky:
About the sky ... yes. I still like this profession. And it's good that flights are performed very often, 2-3 shifts per week. It is very unfortunate that we do not fly into space with such frequency.

You have a chance. It will be known at the end of the year, whether you will fly for a third time.

Oleg Novitsky:
Yes, there will be a medical commission that will determine my readiness - my body's readiness for the next flight. And, most likely, then I will be appointed to a crew, and the preparation will begin again.

And between flights... Do you somehow try to maintain your health, your physical form? Before the medical examination.

Oleg Novitsky:
Yes, we drink fruit drinks, we walk along the river. In the morning I ran.

What distance do you usually run? Do you have norms?

Oleg Novitsky:
The body knows how much it needs. Today I ran four kilometers - I thought that was enough.

Do you miss your native country after all?

Oleg Novitsky:
Sure.

Is Belarus changing?

Oleg Novitsky:
It has long since changed, and, in my opinion, for the better. Many guys who travel here, whom I know, speak very well and warmly of the republic, of this order, of cleanliness, of people in particular.

Belarus is also trying not to stand still in terms of space technologies. We will soon have a congress, we are going to launch one more satellite. Do you think we have the potential in the field of manned space exploration?

Oleg Novitsky:
Regarding the ship, I think it's a big fantasy. But it is good that you have that. And as for man, I do not know. Why not? The process is hampered by money issues. To prepare a person for the flight, you need to go through a lot. If you just take them as tourists, it's one thing, but if this is a professional cosmonaut, this is a completely different level of preparation.

Your relatives even installed a special application to observe you during the time you were on the ISS. Did you focus on where you'll be flying?

Oleg Novitsky:
I think it would be nice for any person when he sees a flying station and at that moment can call there and talk.

You probably missed Rita the most. Did you manage to follow her growing up?

Oleg Novitsky:
Yes, because my wife uploaded both photos and small videos. For my part, the process was very good. But for her... It is clear that when I came back home, I was an absolutely extraneous person who appeared in the apartment. And when asked: "Where's dad?" she only pointed in the direction of the refrigerator, where the photograph always hung.

But now she already knows you? Or is she still afraid?

Oleg Novitsky:
She recognizes me. But if we take priorities, she approaches me the last, after everyone else. And not always.

Gorky Park and the Chelyuskintsev Park... Did you visit them in childhood?

Oleg Novitsky:
Yes, we used to go here with great pleasure. The truth is that it happened rare, of course. I always liked both parks.

Did you love overloads already at that time?

Oleg Novitsky:
Yeah... Adrenaline.

In an interview after the first flight, you said that the sight of our Earth fascinated you. How about this time?

Oleg Novitsky:
In the same way, yes. No camera, nothing can convey all the colors, this is the delight for the soul when you see it from the orbit.

You are one of the most "social" cosmonauts.

Oleg Novitsky:
You flatter me.

Your Instagram... Do you post everything yourself or did someone help you?

Oleg Novitsky:
My wife helped me. Because I would not have enough time for that, of course. I did not receive that volume of information (photo, video) that I would like to see in Belarus. The weather is not always ideal. Even now: it's so sunny, but there are clouds, and this cloud covers, for example, the entire city. I wanted to make a good shot of the Brest Fortress, but, unfortunately, it did not happen.

I have not been there myself for a long time. I want to take there my eldest daughter (the youngest will not understand anything anyway). Because while in Khatyn you feel certain things, then the Brest Fortress is such a place that is simply impregnated with courage.

Have children's dreams changed with age? What do you dream about now?

Oleg Novitsky:
Honestly, no. Firstly, if I tell you, they will not come true. But there are no critical things that I would like in my life. There are normal human desires that you want to put into practice: build a house, raise children, have always a favorite job. That's all.

Oleg Viktorovich, we wish that your dreams come true and that you fly for the third time. We will still keep track of your progress. Well, since I said that you are one of the most "social" cosmonauts, then I propose to make a selfie. If not for your Instagram, then at least for mine.

Oleg Novitsky:
Let's do that.
