Belarusian fathers to get social leave for childcare

A social leave for childcare will be rendered to Belarusian fathers. The novelties are being looked into in the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection.

The leave is planned to be short – no more than two weeks – and it will not be paid for. However, the employer has no right to refuse such a leave. Fathers will be able to go on social childcare leave during the first six months from the moment of the child’s birth.

Martina Artemenko, deputy head of the population, gender and family policy department of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Belarus:
Whilst developing such a norm, we are orientating at international experience. It is necessary to say that this norm is new to the Belarusian law system. The main aim of this norm was to give a possibility to fathers to care for their child together with the mother after birth.

A social survey was carried out in Belarus in spring of 2017, and most of the respondents agreed with the novelty.

Meanwhile, the number of families with many children is growing in Belarus – there are nearly 92 thousand of them, which means that more and more mothers are in need of the help of their close ones.
