Ashmyany customs bribe case verdict announced

On August 8 the court announced the verdict in the case of bribes at Ashmyany customs. It had lasted more than six months.

Most of the accused got from 5 to 8 years imprisonment with confiscation of property. These are 16 people and 12 of them are customs officers.

The criminal group let more than 3,000 trucks without payment. Bribes taken by the customs officers ranged from 110 to 750 US dollars.

The court also decided to confiscate in favor of the state about $2 million, which were seized by police investigators in the apartment of Garnik Sarumyanets. The customs officer-turned businessman was given the maximum term - 11.5 years in the colony with a reinforced regime. So far, the verdict has not entered into force and may be appealed within 10 days.
