Morinari Watanabe: I must put more effort into sport development in Belarus

Not only personnel decisions were made in the Independence Palace. On August 7, Alexander Lukashenko met with the president of the International Federation of Gymnastics Morinari Watanabe.

On August 6, 2017 the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup ended in Minsk. More than 120 athletes, as well as sports functionaries and specialists from 23 countries competed. According to Alexander Lukashenko, this spectacular kind of sport must preserve its beauty and grace.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus:
I saw your performance on TV. One thought did not leave me, if being honest. Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport where there is still a lot of subjectivism. And when I watched you, I thought that maybe you will be the person who will bring this subjectivism down to zero. It will be hard to get rid of it completely, but it is necessary to combat it. You have probably noticed that Belarus keeps its promise. Belarus always keeps its promise, and all our people who are involved in rhythmic gymnastics also keep their word. And I want to firmly promise you that in this process along this road you will always find support on the part of Belarus and can use it at any time. As for Belarus, I have already thanked you for holding the World Cup in Belarus. Secondly, I very much hope that you will help us to return to the elite of gymnastics. You know that we had a wonderful school, but, unfortunately, we lost it, unlike Japan. Your country was at the top and stayed and stayed there. Speaking of rhythmic gymnastics, maybe you could turn this sport into something that resembles art and femininity more, without these extra difficulties that simply destroy rhythmic gymnastics.

Using the opportunity, Alexander Lukashenko awarded Morinari Watanabe an honorary badge "For merits in the development of the Olympic movement in the Republic of Belarus". The award was also presented to the famous Belarusian gymnast, the vice-president of the International Federation and deputy chairman of the Belarusian Gymnastics Association Nelli Kim.

Morinari Watanabe was elected president of the International Federation of Gymnastics in 2016. It is one of the oldest sports organizations in the world. Several types of sport are under the aegis of the federation: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampoline jumping, acrobatics and sports aerobics.

Marinari Wotanabe, president of the International Federation of Gymnastics:
I suppose that I must put more effort into the development of sport in Belarus. By the way, Belarus took gold in trampoline jumping at the Olympics in Rio; it is one of the disciplines, which our federation is developing. Belarus could win more medals in rhythmic gymnastics, in trampoline jumping, in sports gymnastics, because the next Olympic Games will be held in my native country – in Japan. Please, feel free to ask me if I can help you with anything is this connection.

At the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup in Minsk Belarusian athletes won 10 medals. In individual exercises Yekaterina Galkina and Alina Gornosko proved the traditions of the national gymnastics school. Organization possibilities of Belarus were once again praised.

By the way, the Palace o Gymnastics is being built in Minsk. It is quite possible that the next top tournament will be held there. The results of team Belarus are rather modest at the moment. However, Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that Belarus intends returning the previous positions. The next Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo in 2020.
