Belarus President asks local authorities to use power to the full extent

Focus should be on improving the quality of life in Belarus' regions, said Alexander Lukashenko on August 7 during the meeting with newly appointed local officials. Seven of the 118 districts of Belarus will get new leaders or deputy heads of executive committees.

The first deputy governor was replaced in the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee. Orsha district, which is now undergoing real modernization and reconstruction, will be headed by former presidential aide, inspector for the Vitebsk region Alexander Poznyak. Oleg Poskrobko was deputy minister of housing and communal services and was now agreed by the President to the post of the head of the Soligorsk district executive committee. New leaders are also in the Gantsevichi, Drogichin, Beshenkovichi, Osipovichi, and Khotimsk districts.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus:
You are coming to lead the primary links of the administrative hierarchy of power in a difficult time. I very much ask you to exercise your authority in full, so that I do not remind you once again that you are the chairmen of the district executive committees and you are responsible for the functioning of these territories. Sort out who you are going to work with. If people have lost their professional qualities, they need to be replaced. If you want to give someone a chance, it will be very good. I don't support it when people resort to drastic changes, because there could be different reasons, different styles of leadership of earlier leaders. So give people a chance. If you want to optimize something somewhere, reduce the administrative apparatus to optimize things financially (you probably know that this was what we proceeded from making the optimization decision), please, it's all in your hands.

Today you are forming administrative apparatuses on the ground, you are in control today, but do not forget that it's just not necessary to drive around the district visiting all farms. You have 3-4 or maybe 5 problematic farms, so deal with them only. This is your face.

Work with people. We must meet with people. People are ready to listen to any lecturers, any preachers, but people want to see a leader who is vested with authority and can solve their problems today.

The school year is approaching. Schools must be ready for classes. You are my representatives on the ground, and I very much ask you to exercise power as it should, so that people understand and feel that the authorities are there.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that the chairmen of the district executive committees are assuming their duties in a difficult time. The harvesting campaign is at its height. In each district, it has its own characteristics, which requires increased attention. So the new leaders don't have time to waste.
