Alexander Lukashenko about cooperation within Donetsk and Lugansk regions’ interests

Belarus and Ukraine have huge potential for development of cooperation.

This was stated by Alexander Lukashenko on July 21, 2017 at a meeting with Petro Poroshenko.

According to Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus and Ukraine need to enter markets of third countries.

The priorities of development of Belarus’ and Ukraine’s economies are agriculture, petrochemisty, industrial cooperation and transport logistics.

Vladimir Omelyan, Ukraine’s Infrastructure Minister:
Belarusian roads serve as an example in Eastern Europe. Ukraine is putting a lot into the development of road infrastructure. At the moment we are moving forward the initiative “Railway connections of five capitals”, which should include Kyiv, Minsk and three Baltic capitals.

Since the last meeting of the two Presidents in April 2017, a lot has been done, the mutual trade has increased.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus:
The potential of Belarus and Ukraine is huge. And what we have today, Ukraine is the second external trade partner for Belarus, and Belarus is the fourth partner for a big country as Ukraine, I suppose that you would agree, it shows the level. Belarus and Ukraine represent the closest and friendliest nations.

We, Russian people, Ukrainians are the nucleus in this part of Europe.

And as for the Belarusian nation, I visited the museum o Holodomor (act of genocide). I was pleased to hear there during the excursion about the relations of Belarusians in those days, in the 1930’s, difficult times for Belarus and Ukraine, when Ukrainians could move abroad. And where did they go to? They went to our Belarus. Belarusians shared the last things they had, because the difficult 1930’s were everywhere. This is the call of the ancestors, which means that we must always stay close. It is the most important thing. Even not in the terms of signing contracts, though they are important as well. This is the base of our relations.

Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine:
I am grateful for bringing a very presentable delegation here; the majority of ministers are presented here. I am hoping to chart new formats, a new road map, new steps, new orientation points, which can increase our efficient cooperation even more.

Presidents Lukashenko and Poroshenko discussed the possibilities of regional cooperation.

Alexander Lukashenko:
We do not have any "allergy", we do not trade or make friends against someone, God forbid. We want to work together in distant countries too, create joint products and sell them. As for cooperation, we create enterprises for you, you create enterprises for us. We are ready to move in this direction and have absolutely no questions. We are developing regional cooperation with Russia, with China, with big states.

Perhaps, we need to work on the issue and gather such interregional forums?

We can offer Gomel. You were there, you love this city.

Petro Poroshenko:
I am sure that you are known in Ukraine as a statesman, aimed at the most effective and concrete result. I am convinced that the development of close relations with neighboring countries, first of all with Belarus, remains an important priority for us.

The number of contracts signed today at the business forum alone has resulted in large sums, as we agreed back on April 26 and today. Although our friendship cannot be measured with money, it is very important that our countries receive concrete results on the basis of mutually beneficial cooperation. As a result of negotiations between the heads of state, agreements were signed in the field of science, culture and interethnic relations.

Alexander Lukashenko:
We have agreed on the future development of border control, which is quite natural considering the mutual border of more than 1000 kilometers. I am convinced, that the present agreement will serve or dynamical development of the two countries, strengthening of friendship between our countries. I won’t keep a secret; today we spoke a lot about cooperation within the interests of Donets and Lugansk regions. And first of all, I told Mr. Poroshenko about it and asked him, Belarus renders humanitarian aid to these regions.

We would like to work there without mediators and in the shortest way.

Petro Poroshenko:
Minsk agreements are the only single-source documents on de-escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

Belarus and Ukraine are interested in expanding export, developing industrial cooperation, joint projects on modernization of road and transport infrastructure, implementation of innovative technologies. The economic target of the two countries is a commodity circulation o eight billion dollars.

Alexander Lukashenko:
We have all the possibilities to develop such volumes. The cochairmen of the Belarus-Ukraine Intergovernmental Commission ensured us, that we will reach this level within two years. Perhaps, we will be able to exceed it. Therefore, we agreed to create new production lines in different sectors. Last year more than 2500 Belarusian tractors, about 180 harvesters and 500 lifts were assembled at joint plants in Ukraine. The results are not bad, but they are a lot lower than the ones we should orientate at.
