Belarus ready to discuss human rights issues with USA in any format

Belarus and the USA should continue to dialogue on sensitive topics in a constructive way. The parties need to move from mutual reproaches and demands towards active cooperation.

This is what President Alexander Lukashenko said on July 6 meeting with a group of American congressmen from the largest delegation at the 26th session of the OSCE Parliamentary Session. The United States is represented by 35 people. Such interest cannot be called incidental, the head of state underlined.

Over the past few years, Minsk and Washington have restored a certain level of political confidence. But decades of sanctions have become years of missed opportunities for both sides. Alexander Lukashenko is ready to make up for this time and suggests removing the barriers in the relations.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus:
We know the expectations of the American side in the field of human rights, democracy and other issues. We do not ignore them, we are ready to discuss them in any format, anywhere - be it in Minsk or Washington or New York. The same applies to election issues and so on.

At present, the dynamism of the development of Belarusian-American cooperation has somewhat subsided. Some of our ill-wishers say that normalization has died out, that the period of crisis again comes into our relations with the United States. I disagree. There is no crisis, but there is a lack of ideas. Therefore, today's meeting is very important for maintaining at least the former dynamism that we once reached. I propose to think how we could, together with the United States Congress, make the Belarusian-American relations more active.

The conversation turned out to be frank. In addition to mutual interest, the parties recalled the involvement of the American side in the liquidation of the Chernobyl consequences. American congressmen also asked about the position of President Lukashenko in resolving the Ukrainian issues. The USA senators highlighted the role of Belarus and thanked the Belarusian leader for participating in the peaceful settlement of the Donbas crisis.
