European Commission to assess Belarusian NPP stress tests

The main equipment at the first power unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (NPP) has been installed, said Russian construction experts on June 19 in Moscow.

The large-scale forum Atomexpo is underway there at the moment. The Belarusian stand has been presented here too.

The project in Ostrovets draws special attention of countries which plan to use the peaceful atom. The construction of the first power unit of the Belarusian NPP is going according to plan and it is scheduled to be launched in 2019. As has been repeatedly stressed, Belarus hopes to use the electricity not only domestically but also to export it to the EU.

Vladimir Semashko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus:
We will get 26-27% of energy thanks to the nuclear power plant. In 2016, we consumed 19.4 billion cubic meters of gas. Almost 20 billion. With the launch of the nuclear power plant, we will reduce gas consumption by some 5.5 billion m3.

The development of nuclear energy makes it possible to improve the ecological situation, Vladimir Semashko stresses. As for the security of the Belarusian project, the European Commission will give an independent assessment of the stress tests at the Belarusian NPP in the near future.
