3D organs and electronic laboratories: cooperation of doctors and technology

Belarusian medical workers tend to use modern technologies today. The large-scale reconstruction of all intensive care and operation blocks in city and regional hospitals has come to an end. Tablets will soon be implemented in the work of doctors, which will help to quickly find out a patient’s anamnesis.

This boy cannot hear us yet. He is deaf from birth. However, a few days ago he got a chance to hear sounds. He had a cochlear implant done at the Republican Centre for Research and Practice in Otolaryngology. In one month time the small patient will start hearing how life sounds.

This compact apparatus is a real guide to a normal life. The surgeon must work with pinpoint accuracy. It is worth it, though.

Nikolai Greben, director of the Republican Centre for Research and Practice in Otolaryngology:
Before children like this had one choice-to attend schools for deaf children. Today we have one task to make such schools disappear. The cochlear implant program was introduced in 2000 in Belarus, 553 people had implants, 95% of them are children.

Nikolai Greben is the only surgeon in Belarus who does exoprothesis operations on ears.

All the girls who had no ears are now making plats with their hair, because they didn’t have such a possibility before.

Such operations do not only have a cosmetic effect, but sometimes even bring hearing back. Operations like this are free of charge in Belarus.

I would like to thank doctor Nikolai Greben and to thank the anaesthesiologist as well, and all the staff of the centre.

This tooth was made on a 3D printer. The colour, shape, size can be used by a dentist any time now. Printing on 3D printers is used in different sectors of medicine.

Yevgeny Lyasota, director of 3D department at a polygraph company:
It can be used in neurosurgery. When a person has a part of his skull missing after some accident. The so-called tool must be made. To make it we make a model of a skull which completely repeats the outline of a real person.

Belarusian doctors actively use 3D technologies. Before starting an operation, a surgeon can practice on such organs. The mistake costa a lot.

You can make any piece, project what is happening inside a human’s body. As many as five years ago there were no technologies like this one.

The technologies develop with every day. Medicine and donor blood are transported with the help of drones. They will be saving people whose heart stopped in the future.

Everyone got acquainted with electronic queues in surgeries now. It is only one element of the large-scale programme “Web-surgery” which is carried out in Belarus. Every Belarusian has his own medical card. It is a pass to the medical world. Doctors are now computerizing tests, x-rays and medical cards of patients as well.

It simplifies the diagnostics, saves time of specialists going to laboratories.

Vitebsk region has a mobile complex, which solves several problems in one go. Women do not have to go to Vitebsk to have a mammography done any more. Secondly, the results are immediately transferred to Vitebsk regional diagnostic centre, where highly qualified specialist will study the results.

Nikolai Yeremin, head of radiodiagnosis department at Vitebsk regional diagnostic centre:
If a pathology is found, we duplicate these mammograms and send them to an oncological centre visa e-mail. And when a woman comes to an oncologist for consultation, he has a possibility to see the mammograms on his working place.

This Institution is carrying out active work on the central electronic laboratory. One of the questions is how to protect confidential information which enters a closed network. Even though this laboratory doesn’t look like a typical one, programmers and doctors have one aim at the end of the day.

The system can help the doctors to see the results.

A machine won’t be able to substitute a doctor, A human organism is an unpredictable thing and the system hasn’t been researched till the end yet. However, if doctors and technicians work together, the chances of recovering increase immensely.
