Belarus President: SCO will not allow destabilizing situation in the world

Alexander Lukashenko outlined the Belarusian priorities in the work of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This morning, the head of state arrived in Astana's Palace of Independence to participate in the summit. After a joint photo session, a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO members in an expanded format began.

Today, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is one of the most influential communities that occupies more than 60% of the territory of Eurasia. It unites 18 countries: 6 participants, 6 observers and 6 dialogue partners.

In his speech at the summit, the Belarusian head of state focused on security issues and the need to strengthen the economic dimension in the association's activities. Alexander Lukashenko emphasizes that the Shanghai organization is rapidly becoming one of the most influential international structures. This is confirmed by the accession to it of major international players - India and Pakistan.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus:
The short period of time that has passed since Belarus joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as an observer has completely convinced us in the rightness of the choice made. I naturally act here as an attentive observer of the processes that are taking place today in the SCO. The peculiarity of the SCO today is that, if all members of the organization desire, no one anywhere will ever be able to destabilize the situation in the world. Cohesion and unity are the key factors in confronting modern challenges and threats, including terrorism, extremism, and organized crime.

The increasing number of countries supporting the Shanghai spirit of equal, mutually beneficial and peaceful coexistence of peoples is an evidence of the SCO's authority.

Two powerful states - India and Pakistan - are becoming its full members. This is not just the most important result, but the courageous and responsible step of our organization. Let's not hide, there are certain problems in relations between these beautiful powerful states. And the fact that you brought them together today in the SCO suggests that you are simply responsible people. By this you have taken upon yourself the solution of these problems. I am sure that, being members of the SCO, both India and Pakistan will not only approach the solution of some small issues, but will manage to resolve them.

This summit has already been called historic. Moreover, such large-scale forums are also a good opportunity to talk on the sidelines.

Alexander Lukashenko held talks with the leaders of Russia, China, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan as well as with the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan.

Earlier, Alexander Lukashenko met with the UN Secretary General and held talks with the Kazakhstan President.
