Minsk Cup international women's tennis tournament underway in Belarus capital

The international women's tennis tournament Minsk Cup is underway in Minsk. As in previous years it gathered a number of participants: from Belarus, Germany, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Switzerland.

In 2017, the prize fund of the tournament has decreased - from $25,000 to $15,000. According to the organizers, this will contribute to the successful performance of Belarusian tennis players because of reduced competition. Eight Belarusians are in the main draw. The highest rating among them is Irina Shimanovich - she is the fourth seeded.

Eduard Gladkov, tournament director:
Rating always matters, but let's not forget that this is tennis, and in world practice we have repeatedly seen that people without rating or players from qualification reached the finals and won tournaments. Therefore, I believe that Belarusian athletes have a chance to get through the tournament as far as possible. Fans should come, because tennis is always an interesting and exciting event. Playing at home Belarusian athletes will be pleased to see the support of their compatriots.

Minsk Cup will end on June 10, and immediately after it another tournament with a prize pot of $15,000 will take place in Minsk: the memorial tournament dedicated to Marat Zverev.
