Alexander Lukashenko about government’s investment into sport

The unsuccessful performance of Belarusian sportsmen in Rio Olympics mustn’t repeat once again. All the necessary conditions were created for the sportsmen but they did not equal the hopes. Alexander Lukashenko held a meeting at the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus on May 30, 2017.

The next Winter Olympic Games will be held in 2018 in South Korea. It is important to analyze the situation in Belarusian sport today so that mistakes are not repeated. Alexander Lukashenko stated that it is necessary to determine the potential medal sports. It is impermissible to make plans for financing without a real evaluation of chances.

What is more, it has been decided to cut down on the expenses of the National Olympic Committee by 25%. There are many systematic issues to be solved as well: from children’s sports equipment to training coaches.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus:
Everything necessary is done for sportsmen in Belarus. However, no results are seen. Yes, the government praised the achievements of sportsmen in the Winter Olympics of 2014 in Sochi, Belarus did quite well at the European Games in Baku in 2015. What was the situation like in Rio? Well, there were some achievements. Wrestling and weight lifting. However, it is not enough. The performance of team Belarus was a failure as a whole. Does It correspond to the investments of the government into the sport sector? There is no point in justifying the situation: to blame it on the climate, the disorganization of Brazil preconceived judging. Everyone understood that the Olympics in Rio was not a tour, it was one of the most difficult exams. Everyone was on equal terms. Team Belarus should have been head and shoulders above its rivals, so that there would have been no doubt in Belarus’ victory.

Some days before the Olympics in Rio a meeting was held, sportsmen and the best of specialists attended it. No one had any complaints then that they were lacking something for successful performance. This time you got everything you wanted from the government. For this reason we need to admit that these results are a real reflection of sluggishness of sportsmen, officials, and the low competence of coaches and the wish of the athletes to win. The Winter Olympics in South Korea are not far off. And what with Belarus will go there? There is no time left. If you fil the Olympics in South Korea, the people of Belarus will never forgive it. You know, dear presidents of federations and dear coaches, what has to be done. Find the best of the best and train them for the Olympic Games, as it is done all over the world.

New presidents of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus have been chosen on May 30, 2017. Alexander Lukashenko has been re-elected President of the National Olympic Committee. Andrei Astashevich was chosen the new First Vice President. Sergei Repkin and Semyon Shapiro were elected Vice Presidents.
