Alexander Lukashenko holds meeting with Markku Markkula

Belarus and the EU will be cooperating in regional development sector. It was discussed during the meeting of Alexander Lukashenko and Markku Markkula, the President of the European Committee of the Regions on May 23, 2017.

The organization represents local authorities of 28 EU countries. Conferences with their participation were held in Minsk the day before. Economic growth and energy efficiency, new working places, tourism development, the strengthening of local authorities’ positions and solutions of topical issues were the main subjects of the discussion. Alexander Lukashenko said that the previous evens closely entwine into the normalization of Belarus-EU relations.

I am very happy to meet you because you deal with very serious issues. Belarus faced problems ever since the Soviet times. These are the problems connected with people living in villages, small towns. Belarus is a trusted partner for those in Europe who take care of kind and happy life of people, who primarily in villages.

The previous meetings in Minsk, held with the participation of the European body, closely entwine into the normalization of Belarus-EU relations. You give corresponding recommendations to the EU concerning a wide range of relations between Belarus and the EU. Especially for the Eastern Partnership organization. I am very grateful for the directions of cooperation which were looked into in Belarus during your Committee’s session. I am convinced that the current visit will be another step towards establishing friendly between Belarus and the EU.

Thank you for inviting me and for holding meetings in Minsk. The influence of our organization in Europe is rather high. Our Committee, just as you do in Belarus, pays special attention to residents of small towns and villages in order to provide them with an adequate level of social support and life, to reach the key aim of stable social position in the society as a whole.

Alexander Lukashenko also spoke about the interest of Belarus-Finland cooperation. The President of the European Committee of the Regions is from this Scandinavian country. President Lukashenko hopes that the European official will contribute into Belarus’ cooperation with Finland.
