Belarus narrowly lose to Finland in 2017 IIHF WM opener

The Belarusian national hockey team held their first match at the 81st IIHF World Championships.

Under the arches of the Paris AccorHotels Arena, Dave Lewis' Belarus met with the formidable team of Finland. The beginning of the game did not inspire optimism: Lalande was beaten twice in the opening five minutes.

Fortunately, after that the Belarusians took heart and managed to level the game. They struck back at the end of the second period, with young Yegor Sharangovich punishing the Finnish goalie Joonas Korpisalo for a blunder.

At the fifth minute of the third period Belarus made it 2:2, Evgeny Kovyrshin scoring.

Suomi got man advantage after Dmitry Korobov was penalized and Veli-Matti Savinainen scored a third for Finland that day.

Belarus could not level the score again and narrowly lost 2:3. In the previous meeting between the two sides, Finland won confidently 6:2.

On May 6, Belarus take on the Czech Republic.
