Belarus demands that France apologize as team searched by police ahead of 2017 IIHF WM

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus demands that the French side conduct an investigation into the incident with Belarusian ice hockey players in Paris and provide explanations. In addition, Belarusian diplomats are waiting for an official apology in connection with the inspection of the ice hockey team at the railway station.

Team Belarus arrived in Paris to participate in the IIHF WM 2017 but were searched by police at the railway station. Personal belongings were inspected.

All doctors' medications were also checked. The procedure took about 20 minutes. After the police could not find anything and the team was released.

This morning, the French ambassador was summoned to the Belarusian foreign ministry.

Dmitry Mironchik, Belarus foreign ministry spokesperson:
At a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Kravchenko, strong protest was expressed [to the ambassador]. The Belarusian side demanded to investigate the incident, provide explanations and apologize. And also take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This is not the first incident with a search of Belarusian athletes in France. In April 2016, the kayak and canoe team of Belarus also underwent a thorough search. The police were looking for meldonium.
