The NPP in Astrawyets will meet about 30% Belarus' electricity needs. The project is taking shape and, experts say, it is one of the safest in the world.
At the beginning of 2019, fuel in the first power unit of the station will be loaded. Negotiations on the purchase of a second unit have been completed.
No less active work is going on the second power unit of the NPP. 33 facilities are being built in parallel.
The second power unit will be put into operation a year after the first, in 2020.
Mikhail Mikhadyuk, Deputy Minister of Energy of the Republic of Belarus:
We have signed a supplementary agreement to the contract, which stipulates that for the second power unit, the Russian general contractor in the contractual terms will supply a reactor case made for the Baltic NPP.
It is identical, because the Baltic nuclear power plant was designed for the same project as the Belarusian NPP.
Vladimir Gorin, Deputy Chief Engineer for the training of personnel of the Belarusian nuclear power plant:
Our task is to prevent the wrong activities. Because incorrect actions are worse than the absence of knowledge.
The Belarusian NPP will meet a third of Belarus' energy needs. This increase will allow solving the country's energy issues, and the need to buy electricity abroad will disappear.
