Alexander Lukashenko: I am prepared to finance Science to its full extent, if necessary

Scientific developments today are a necessity to not only colonize Mars or transplant a head to a person, but to produce competitive goods. Not long ago President Lukashenko visited an IT company and cheered up the high tech community.

The Academy of Sciences must also keep up with the “silicon valley”, and in some cases even be ahead. It is important to have a result, then it wouldn’t hurt to invest money into sciences. It was stated by Alexander Lukashenko at a meeting with Belarusian scientists.

This computer looks like an ordinary office one. However, it is highly intellectual. Before holding the meeting, Alexander Lukashenko visited an exhibition of the achievements of modern developments. Nevertheless, Belarusian Science must show its contribution to the economy of the country.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus:
Money shouldn’t be given away just for nothing, it should be earnt. Today I am prepared to finance science in large volumes, because Belarus gave pride of place to the innovative way for economy and social development, which hasn’t showed any results yet, but this is a five-year plan of innovations.

As many as 190 important developments of the Academy of Sciences were implemented by industrialists last year.

Alexander Lukashenko:
I repeated it 1020 times before, and I am tired of repeating it again and again to you. We invent something great, it lays there on a shelf in dust, but nobody wants to buy it. What decision did I make? A real sector of either economy or the social sphere cannot not buy the invention if the director of the Academy of Sciences made a decision that this invention must be realized in Belarus.

Scientists say that producers a hard to reach. Mikhail Myasnikovich, who directed the Academy of Sciences in the past, suggests choosing the subjects of researches more thoroughly.

Mikhail Myasnikovich, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus:
It’s a scientist. Being a scientist means searching for new knowledge. However, he is told to make a toothed wheel, which won’t fall apart. If it falls apart, then you must return the money. And for these reasons scientists, even the famous scientists from a scientific school, simply refuse state funding.

Such a major Academy of Sciences for compact Belarus is pride on the one hand, and on the other the science elite must participate in the strategic planning of a state.

Alexander Lukashenko:
Many of you are just about managing, not rich, but I can say are entirely not rich. A real scientist must live a normal life in the society. It is the main aim of my meeting today. However, I am for results.

A lot of problems were discussed at the meeting. For instance, the deliberation of scientific expertise, detached attitude of agrarians to technology compliance. It was impossible to solve all the problems in the five hours of the meeting.

Alexander Lukashenko:
Let’s agree that we will make a pause with you. If you like, till September. Then there’ll be the evaluation of the situation and perspectives. We must finally put an end to all the disputable issues, concerning the academies, whether it should be reformed or how they should be directed and so on. These are serious matters.

The two most powerful instruments for the development of a country today are science and technologies. Belarus has a powerful intellectual potential which must become a locomotive of innovative economy.
