President Lukashenko: I am for EU but against its double standards

Belarus is interested in attracting Belgian investments and ready for a political dialogue on extending business cooperation.

On March 15, 2017 Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko met with Didier Reynders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium.

Besides the internal political issues, cooperation between Belarus and the EU was discussed. Alexander Lukashenko said that Belarus will always work for unification and stability in Europe.

Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus:
As for the political relationship, I understand that Belgium is the capital of the empire, and you hold it dear. There is also quite a lot of dependence on the EU. I consider it normal and lately I have positively been for keeping the EU. Because I am for a multipolar world. The EU is one of the most powerful strengths alongside with China and the USA. It’s a powerful support for the entire planet. If it disappears, negative consequences are inevitable. I don’t take Brexit or nationalistic movements in seriously. No matter what it takes, the EU needs to remain. That’s why I am for the European Union. Nevertheless, I am an opponent of double standards, which the EU sometimes applies. That’s why I would like the EU to correspond to those declarations, which the Union itself presents to the whole world. Honesty, decency and democracy. You will always see Belarus a country which is for unification and stability in Europe. Belarus never created problems for the EU, even in the hardest of times, and Belarus will never create problems for the EU in the future. Belarus wants to cooperate with the Union.

According to Didier Reynders, Belgium is hoping to activate contacts with Belarus in bilateral relationships and in the international arena as well.

Didier Reynders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium:
It’s my first time in Minsk, but I have experience in communicating with Belarusians in finance and bank spheres. I would like to confirm the interest of Belgian companies in cooperating with Belarus. With great interest Belgians follow the economic reforms which are or will be implemented in Belarus.
