Minsk preparing for U23 Fencing European Championships

President of the European Fencing Confederation, during a working visit to the Belarusian capital Minsk, praised the city's readiness to host the U23 Fencing European Championships. The National Olympic Committee held a working meeting with the participation of Stanislav Pozdnyakov, as well as representatives of the Belarusian side.

Among them were the minister of sport Alexander Shamko, Secretary General of the NOC Alexey Kotov, as well as the chairman of the Belarusian Fencing Federation Alexander Gagiev.

Participants unanimously noted that Minsk will successfully cope with the holding of the U23 Championships in April.

Stanislav Pozdnyakov, President of the European Fencing Confederation:
With these sports facilities, of course, it is very important to use them for the promotion of various sports. As for fencing, it is one of the sports that has very long and rich traditions. We are still proud of Belarusian athletes, who back in the days of the Soviet Union won gold medals at Olympic Games.

This will be the first time Belarus has hosted fencing competitions of such a high rank. The organizers are ready to use the experience of foreign colleagues.

The main novelty of the April competition will be webcasts.

Another urgent issue that the Confederation expects to discuss with Belarus is the including of fencing in the program II European Games.

Stanislav Pozdnyakov, President of the European Fencing Confederation:
We have a common desire, the International Federation and the European one, to hold a fencing tournament. The only thing is the qualification for the Olympic Games. This is the only stumbling block today. The fact is that the decision to hold the European Championship qualification was taken before the decision to hold the European Games in Minsk.
