Belarus has established an organizing committee on the preparation and holding in Minsk of a session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. The corresponding decree was signed by the Belarus President on February 8.
The annual meeting of the organization of MPs will be held in July 2017. It will involve more than 300 parliamentarians from 56 countries.
Valery Voronetsky, chairman of international affairs commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus:
Such activities are very important in that they can improve the country's image. I think we can show Belarus, our capabilities, our culture.
A large-scale plenary meeting, meetings of the standing committee as well as committees on general policy, security, economy, environment, democracy and human rights will take place during the OSCE PA. It will be a discussion of the whole range of issues that concern Europe today.
Questions related to the session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Minsk were discussed in December 2016 at a meeting of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko with heads of the OSCE mission for election observation.
Back then the President said that "the session should be an important step to further ensure stability and security in the European region."
