Bison counting completing in Belovezhskaya Pushcha

Bison population is being counted in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. According to scientists, the number of bisons has increased by 30 individuals over the last year. And now we can already say about the recovery of the population.

Some animals don’t like crowds of curious visitors and spend time in wilderness. It’s difficult for the scientists to track down the bisons in those places.

Alexei Bunevich, senior fellow at the National Park Belovezhskaya Pushcha:
A large herd (from 50 to 150 animals) is a real problem. You have to go five, sometimes ten times to count all the animals.

Sergey Korotya, Research Associate of the National Park Belovezhskaya Pushcha:
The easiest way to take the bison into account is to do it in the area of fertilizing. We come silently, count them and write down their structure.

However, such places are rather rare.

Piotr Butrim, CTV:
Counting the bison herd is not so easy. If you move carelessly, the whole herd of animals will run away to hide in the woods.

The number of bison in the forest exceeded the symbolic mark of 500. It’s more than a third of all Belarusian bison.

Nikolai Bulatovsky, technician game manager Khvoynitsky forestry:
Each year, the birth rate of young individuals is always rising. 10-12 animals appear.

In total, about fifty bisons were born last year. And this is the best environmental assessment. However, damage to agriculture is a big downside: winter crops are suffering from bison's weight.
